A friend of mine seems to now be a missing person. I have worked with him for the past 2 1/2 years and have enjoyed his company and support. Very good guy. It is not uncommon for locals to venture out for some camping, and I hope that this is all it is.

Vail Police are investigating a missing person last seen in West Vail. Thirty-six-year-old James “Jamie” Garrett of Vail was last seen on July 5 at about 11am when he spoke with a friend in Chamonix neighborhood. Jamie is a white male, five foot eleven inches tall, weighing 175 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Jamie is an avid outdoorsman and frequently goes camping in the Piney Lake and Eiseman Hut areas.

VAIL — Friends and family members of Vail local Jamie Garrett are worried sick because no one has seen Garrett since Tuesday.

Garrett, 36, is the wine director at the Sonnenalp Resort and is a member of the town of Vail's liquor board.

Cathy Cohn, a friend, said Garrett sent her an email on Tuesday asking her to look after his dog. The email also said that if he wasn't back by Tuesday night, to call another friend to look after the dog.

Cohn said it's unlike Garrett to miss work, but he didn't show up for his Thursday shift and didn't call.

“We're just not sure if he's had an accident or what,” Cohn said.

Garrett's sister, Katie Garrett, said she and some family members are flying into Colorado from Pennsylvania this week to help look for him. Garrett is originally from West Chester, Penn.

Cohn said Garrett had mentioned earlier Tuesday that he might head up to Piney Lake later that day, but Cohn said Garrett didn't take any camping equipment with him and that it's unlike him to leave his dog at home if he were heading out on a hike.

Vail Police Det. Sgt. Chris Botkins said the Vail Police Department is treating the case as a missing person case.

“At this point, we don't really have any indication of any criminal activity or suicide,” Botkins said.

Botkins said the Vail Police Department is investigating. They've put out an alert to law enforcement agencies across the state to keep an eye out for Garrett and his navy blue Jeep Wrangler, with license plate number 944 RWM.

A sheriff's deputy headed up the Piney road Thursday and didn't see his truck, although Botkins said he wasn't sure how far up the road the deputy traveled because bad weather rolled in.

“We don't really have any indication that (Garrett) went there, but it's a starting point,” Botkins said.

Botkins said police have spoken with Garrett's employer and colleagues at the Sonnenalp Resort and Garrett had Tuesday and Wednesday off from work but was supposed to work Thursday. They said Garrett is a very dependable person and always comes to work on time.

Police think Garrett went into the Sonnenalp on Tuesday morning or early afternoon to work for a bit, even though it was his day off, but they're still trying to confirm that with the Sonnenalp.

Police know for sure that he was last seen around 11 a.m. Tuesday when he was driving out his Chamonix neighborhood in Vail. Garrett lives in Homestake.

“It's very possible he was going to work (at that time),” Botkins said.

Friends and family began writing messages on Garrett's Facebook page Thursday afternoon asking him to call someone and also spreading the word that he is missing.

Emily Dade, Garrett's friend and former girlfriend, said she doesn't think he took anything with him when he left his home such as a change of clothes or any type of overnight bag.

“I'm hoping his car is just stuck somewhere,” Dade said.
