VAIL, Colorado — Vail Mountain Rescue found the body of Vail resident Jamie Garrett, who had been missing since Tuesday, in an area near Piney Lake north of Vail on Saturday afternoon, sources said.

The Eagle County Sheriff's Office reported that a search-and-rescue crew was in the Piney River Basin area Saturday because that's where Garrett's friends said he might have been headed Tuesday, the last time anyone saw him. Garrett's friends also searched the area Friday, as well as Muddy Pass, Red and White, Shrine Mountain and the Eisman Hut area, with no success, the Sheriff's Office said.

Garrett was the wine director at the Sonnenalp Resort and a member of the town of Vail's liquor board.

The Sheriff's Office reported that searchers discovered a body. According to Cathy Cohn, a friend of Garrett's, as well as a Facebook page dedicated to the search, the body belonged to Garrett.

Cohn said Garrett had emailed her on Tuesday and told her to keep an eye on his dog. He had mentioned that he might go to the Piney Lake area that day, Cohn said. He also said in the email to contact another friend that could watch the dog should Garrett not return home Tuesday night, but it wasn't until he didn't show up for work on Thursday that friends reported him missing.

Cohn said Garrett left his camping gear and credit cards behind as well as the dog, which didn't make any sense.

“It's a nightmare. He could be anywhere,” Cohn said Saturday morning.

Friends started a Facebook page Saturday, “Help Find Jamie Garrett, missing since Tuesday July 5th,” where they posted everything from police contact information to a picture of the flier being posted throughout the area.

Some friends delegated specific responsibilities related to spreading the word to regional media outlets. Other friends shared ideas for the investigation, such as tracking his cell phone.

Vail Police Detective Sgt. Chris Botkins said Garrett's phone had been turned off, so police were unable to track it. The last time Garrett's phone was used was Tuesday, Botkins said.

Family members flew in from Pennsylvania and were helping police with information and the search.

On Saturday afternoon, four days since anyone had seen or spoken to Garrett, friends were still holding out hope.

“Jamie has a very strong connection to a lot of people in Portland and may contact one of us or even show up here — a long, long shot, I know, but we who love him will hold onto that hope,” said Matthew Dykes, a friend.

Friends said Garrett always seemed to have a big smile on his face and was upbeat, passionate about his job and an avid outdoorsman.

Condolences from friends were added to the Facebook page as people learned of Garrett's death.
