If only we could do something about healthcare to make the whole thing cheaper. If there was some form of system, one that almost every industrialized nation (except us) has figured out and implemented in a way to control cost and provide for the masses. Maybe with lower healthcare cost we could afford to have good teachers and pay them well enough to stay in the teaching profession. Dang it, too bad we don't live in a world like that. :kicksrock:

Maybe with lower per-pupil costs we could afford to keep our HC system as is and not have to worry about rationing services and still pay enough to attract the birghtest people into the medical profession. Dang it, too bad we don't live in a world like that.

I think a great deal of it is due to the fact that they have lived in a cocoon, with regard to work, for much of their life.

Agree. I could only imagine a govt led assault on benefits and an already meager salary is equally as terrifying as not having a company summer picnic; if not moreso.

Talk about living in a cocoon. What's the weather like up there in Liberal Fantasy Land?

Pathetic that your main goal is to try and irritate people. Definately a great quality to have in a person.

AFAIK, the US education system is much the same as the rest of the civilized world. That is not true of the health care system.

With Wisconsin suffering the worst job loss numbers in the nation for the calendar year.

2011, Governor Scott Walker promised yesterday that he will reveal newly revised numbers this week that will, effectively, change water into wine on the Wisconsin job front.

And he’s done it just in time for the June 5th recall election.

So, just how is Walker about to turn Wisconsin’s dismal job numbers from lemons to lemonade?

The Governor has simply decided to ignore the system used by the Department of Labor —and every other state in the nation —to measure job growth (or loss) and elected instead to go with a different set of numbers that makes things in Wisconsin look better.

Still in the dark I see. This recall election is about Collective Bargaining, not jobs. The left is TRYING to make it about jobs and pretty much any other issue because the CB issue is a loser with the voters. This whole recall started because of CB and trying to nail Walker on jobs after only 15 months in office is ridiculous. He supposed to have 4 years.

And your the same guy that wants to give Obama 4 more years because the previous 4 wasn't enough to turn things around.

And the result is?

So, if we change our healthcare to mirror those of european nations the outcome will be the same, right?

BTW, there was a report that came out last week which basically said our costs are out of control for 3 reasons: the availavility /overuse of tests (MRI, CT, Colonscopy, Mamograms, etc..), disproportionate obesity and no cost controls.

2 out of the three are fixable

There is also this tidbit from the study:

"It is a common assumption that Americans get more health care services than people in other countries, but in fact we do not go to the doctor or the hospital as often," said study author David Squires, senior research associate at The Commonwealth Fund.

"The higher prices we pay for health care and perhaps our greater use of expensive technology are the more likely explanations for high health spending in the US. Unfortunately, we do not seem to get better quality for this higher spending."

Data for the study came from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and other sources, the foundation said.

If you really want to dig into the metrics that they are looking at to explain the dicrepancies there are a few other interesting tid bits that pop-up with regard to HC costs in the US vs. the rest of the world:

The biggest driver of the gap is spending with specialist doctors, which is 3-6 times higher in the U.S. versus peers. This difference is mainly due to much higher prices in the U.S., which are driven by both higher per-procedure rates paid by both public and private payers, and larger proportion of higher-paying private payers in the U.S. By comparison, public per visit rates for U.S. primary care doctors are at the high end of the range for peer countries and private rates are slightly above the range, and primary care doctor incomes are higher than peer countries, but less than half of the incomes of U.S. specialists.

Laugesen and Gleid conclude (in very circumspect language, which I have translated here to plain English) that the physician spending gap exists because mainly because CMMS*, which sets U.S. Medicare and Medicaid rates, pays much more for specialist services relative to primary care services than government authorities in peer countries; private insurers have done a poor job of negotiating rates with specialists

The high level of per capita income in the U.S. is a major factor driving U.S. health care spending. The U.S. has higher per capita income than any other large country, and higher income is closely associated with higher health care spending. Analysis done by Princeton professor Uwe Reinhardt suggests that about $1,200 per capital (in 2008 dollars) of the difference between the U.S. and peer countries (34% of the gap) is due to high levels of income in the U.S.

Basically, even if we were to move to a system of nationalized HC you would still see higher cost in the US due to poor cost controls by the fed gov as well as higher per capita income keeping prices up.

The exact same thing is happening in education. We pay teachers more, we have more "technology" and we demand a higher per capita income. The net gain from all of this is that we rank lower in education than most of these same nations who have "better" HC than us.

Another thing... I find it interesting that people want us to spend more on education and less on HC...

So if we had some form of single payer system, we would have a cost control, yes? And I don't want to hijack the cheeze fight too much but we already have a rationed system.

Please point out where I am wrong - be specific please...

Why are govt workers off limits for things that most of the private workers have already had to pay for or go through? Again - that is for people who still have jobs and have not been let go because of this economy.

What is your specific plan to save money in this state?

I for one commend walker for having his administration also take pay cuts to help save money instead of just going after political opponents. That is truly leading by example and he should be commended...... What? He hasn't done anything of the sort to "save money"? And he hasn't changed his pension deal either?

How surprising.

We need to save money and increase pension contributions. But only with democrats and teachers.

I won't disagree with you one bit here.

It is kinda like the people that want to raise taxes on the rich but when asked to kick in a bit extra from their own pocket would never do it.

But it isn't funny if it is about the twins. They get all self righteous when that happens.

Oh, look, the two lovebirds at it again. Why don't you and buttwhacked just move in together?
