Going to St. Louis this weekend

This has been a good resource for trips in the past. So, I figured to do it again. The wife and I are taking a long weekend to St. Louis, MO Friday-Sunday. The Cards are away this weekend, so that is out. Any recommendations on the following:

- Dive Bars/Restaurants

- Fancy Restaurants

- Things to do

- Must sees

Looking for to be a little romantic for my wife at least one night, so suggestions on places or things of that nature are welcomed too, any jokes or comments will make me laugh, but not be shared with the wife! :fool:

- Dive Bars/Restaurants - Pappy's BBQ downtown, "The Hill" for Italian restaurants

- Fancy Restaurants - I don't do "fancy", so I don't know

- Things to do - Forest Park (free St. Louis Zoo - awesome, even for adults, Art Museum, Muny, Jewel Box), Laumeier Sculpture Park, City Museum (mostly for kids, but pretty wild in general)

- Must sees - Arch and the Arch grounds. just don't touch the Arch, as people pee on it late at night coming back from the Landing (bars) :innocent: on their way to the parking garage

I drove through there a couple of weeks ago, there was major contruction on I-64, closed going into town (where 64/70/55 all run together) and traffic was backed up pretty bad in the early afternoon on Friday (6/22). Not sure if that was still there last weekend, because we followed I-270 bypass as we should have in the first place.

Basically unless you need to go into downtown, you may want to avoid that area.

some info from MO DOT

Don't know much about the local scene

Actually, at that time, everybody is leaving work from downtown. You should be in good shape (knock on wood).

Close things downtown:

Budweiser tour (2 free beers at the end)

Botanical Gardens

Forest Park (mentioned before - Zoo where even people from San Diego would say, "wow, that's a nice zoo that's even free to enter", Art Museum, St. Louis Science Center if you're a bit of the science-dorky type like I am)

You're not too terribly far from The Loop in U-City.

Lumiere Casino (probably a good option for a close romantic dinner)

Soulard Farmer's Market might be a good time too. Johnny's is not too far from there too. :brow:

Union Station is kind of a ghost town now. Might not be worth the time.

Going up in the Arch is a real weenie-tickler. Riding up in these small cages, then peering (no, not peeing) out of the small windows at the top.

The Hill and the Italian food

"A St. Louis Original" - Imo's Pizza. People either love it, or hate it. Provelone cheese on a thin peppery crust. Mmmmmmm... and order toasted ravioli too. I do not lie about that.

Pappy's Smokehouse should be fairly close to your hotel

Fairmount Park horse races are just across the river in IL

And here's a link to an "Explore St. Louis" site

I tried to stick within about a 20 minute drive or so of where you'll be downtown. If you're willing to expand your range (and maybe include some ideas of what you all like to do), I might be able to add to this list for you.

Enjoy my hometown!

Johnny's and Pappy's are must do's. Skip dessert though and hit Ted Drewes instead.

Dierdorf and Harts is high-quality steak eating if you are willing to head out west, just give yourself 20 minutes to get out there. These guys are former football Cardinals players so there's some homer value there. It's in Westport, an open-air plaza that's nice if the weather isn't blazing hot (good luck with that in STL in July) and also has some neat places to go - looks like there's an outdoor Jazz and Blues festival there Saturday and there's always Funny Bone. Albert Pujols' restaurant is there too but it's not quite as hip to go to now =P

Lenny didn't miss much except you should pass on Imo's - it's evil evil stuff.

There are also a ton of neighborhood events constantly going on throughout the city. I have never seen such a diverse set of local/cultural parades, fairs, fundraisers, parties, etc. Those people don't need much excuse to cut a rug.

ARCH SPOILER FOR THOSE THAT DON"T WANT TO KNOW:

If you are only there for a weekend, skip going up in the arch. 45 minutes in line, 10 minute ride up (5 people in a hanging barrel), you stand in a hallway with some windows that you can see really really far, you feel the structure sway back and forth, and after about 2 minutes of this you get back in that 45 minute line for a 20 minute ride back down. I suppose it's worth it to say you did it, but it's a big time investment and you can definitely get a bigger bang for your limited time elsewhere. The park is cool, the museum is very cool.

Good info here, not sure your crowd but Washington Ave has a ton of different bars and restaurants. Prime Steak on washington is pretty good along with Mosaic. Copia Wine Bar is also good on Washington... really just a ton of restaurants on Washington.

Tony's is about as upscale as you can get in downtown STL. Dierdorf and Harts is good but a drive. Jim Edmonds has a place just off of washington. Pricey and okay. If you want more upscale, drive or cab it up to Clayton - ton of great places to hangout at in a 3-4 block radius. The Loop is also great and you'll get a taste of everything ethnic. You can metrolink it from downtown to all these places if you want just keep in mind that the metro stops at midnight.

The Landing is packed with places too but they're kind of cheesy - kind of like a super tamed down Bourbon Street. It's right around the Arch.
