This is a fascinating argument in my mind.

First, you have Miguel Cabrera winning the triple crown. One of the rarest feats in baseball. Usually, you would think he would run away with the award. However, you also have Mike Trout, who is as complete a player as I have seen in some time.

It seems like an old school, AVG, HR, RBI argument vs. the new school WAR sabermetrics argument.

So, who do you got ?

I completely respect sabermetrics, and Trout's all-around game. However, Cabrera did something that hasn't been done since 1967, so, he gets my vote.........barely.

I voted Cabrera.

Look, I know Trout had a great season, but at the end of the day, Cabrera's team is going to the playoffs. Trout's is not.

Which is particularly important considering that one of the metrics that keeps getting used to justify the Trout vote is tool that measures how much better his team is with him than they'd be without him. Last I checked, if a team with the overall talent that the Angels have misses the play-offs (in the first season where they expanded it, no less), it doesn't matter a whole lot whether they finish 1-2 games out or 10.

In other words, Trout was so valuable to his team that they nearly lived up to expectations as opposed to not coming close. Now, that's not his fault and takes nothing away from what an amazing talent he is and all that. But, take him away, and their chances of winning the WS are exactly the same as they are right now. Take Cabrera away from the Tigers and their chances likely go from "why not?" to "not".

And then there's this trivial notion of the fact that he completed the triple crown, which I'd like to think matters.

I voted Trout basically because he did things that have never been done in the 100+ year history of baseball. In my lifetime there have probably been 30 seasons had by players that exceed what Miggy did stat wise - in fact, this is probably only the third or fourth best season of his career.

At the end of the day I think Cabrera wins because the TC is a phenomenal accomplishment and I think the bulk of voters is still made up of the "old guard" who probably don't respect things like WAR and defensive stats. Of course, these are a lot of the same guys who have decided that Tim Raines doesn't belong in the HOF, so you never know what they are thinking.
