Bears defense without Briggs

Recommended Posts

How much of a hit is this to the Bears D in fantasy terms.

Somebody just dropped them in my league, and I think they're a huge upgrade over my current Vikings D. (I've been looking for better options for weeks, but none have been that much better and defensive scoring is hard to predict.)

Was a surprise move, the guy had Titans D as well, both have a bye this week. So he keeps Titans, and drops Bears for Jets.

I'm gonna try to get him off waivers.

Looking for info on whether Bears D is still good, or how low they've dropped. Not asking for advice on the move I'm making.

Bears D is in really dire shape.

The DT's are decimated. Briggs is out. DJ Williams is out. Tillman is banged up. Peppers isn't playing well.

They have barely sacked the QB year and will continue to give up tons of scoring.

Definitely downgraded a fair amount.

I dont think that u can set and forget with them. They give up too many yards and point vs decent offenses. I think that they are usable as a matchup play and they have the Hester factor as upside.

In FF terms they have been unpredictable this year. Hester gives them some ST value with the occasional TD, and they have a few defensive touchdowns as well, but you have to watch the matchups closely. They are 31st 30th in PPG allowed in the NFL and 30th in sacks, but much better in turnovers: second in fumble recoveries and third in INTs. I own them in one league that does not penalize much for PPG so they are serviceable, but if you are in a league with significant negative penalties for PPG, this squad is of marginal value.

Henry Melton's season ending injury was the biggest blow, but losing Briggs hurts almost as much. Add to that Josh McCown who might put his defense in tough spots here and there, and the outlook isn't so good.

Thanks for the feedback. We don't have ST scoring, so Hester is not relavent to me. We don't do negative scoring on points allowed, but do have a 0-4 point bonus depending on that (5 shutout, 0 for over 30). So points and yards per game are not a big deal either. Sacks, turnovers, safeties and TDs account for most of our scoring, and that is generally in the 5-10 point range for most teams.

As far as the ROS ranking here, I'll be honest and admit that I didn't pony up for the Huddle pay site this year. Been using another free site and trying to do more of my own research as well. They have the Bears D at 5 (behind KC, SEA, SF, HOU).

Either way, I think they're better than the Vikings, and as good as plug n play as I'll get. We have a fee per player added, so streaming defenses based on matchups isn't really feasible. I suppose I could carry two (CHI or BAL along with MIN) and play matchups.

BAL would be the best of those 3

It's going to make their defense worse in a pure football sense but not sure how it will affect them fantasy-wise. Briggs was responsible for 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles so far this season. Will there be someone that can step up and reproduce those stats? Not sure.

That said, without a consistent tackler in the linebacking corps, one could surmise that opposing offenses will be able to move the ball eaiser, allowing for the defense to potentially make plays that translate into fantasy points.

If I were ranking them, I'd bump them down a couple notches.

Bears' offseason priorities:

1a. Decide Cutler's future with the team.

1b. Overhaul the defense.
