Dontari Poe has herniated disc surgery

Recommended Posts

No clear timetable as to when he will return, but it's conceivable that he could miss several regular season games. Makes for a bittersweet time in Chiefs Kingdom, as we got Eric Berry back and lost Poe in the same day. Jaye Howard will try to fill the void for now, we also drafted Rakeem Nunez-Roches this offseason who could see more playing time than usual for a 6th-round rookie.

This is troubling news for KC. Poe is one of the best 3-down NT's in the league, and missing him for any length of time could seriously hurt their playoff chances.

Poe gets double and sometimes triple teamed on virtually every play, and if a lesser player takes his place (or if Poe is less effective when he returns), that's one more blocker offenses can devote to slowing down Houston and Hali.

Poe is a good pass rusher in his own right, and losing him means less pressure on the QB all around. Besides this, the Chief run defense is already a trouble spot, and without the massive Poe to clog the middle, it will likely get worse.

This injury could hurt Poe financially, too, since 2015 is his contract year and he's regarded around the league as a franchise-type player.

Dontari Poe is a big key to a Chiefs title run this year, and the team simply can't afford to be without him for long. Two of KC's first three games are with Denver and at Green Bay, and if Poe misses those games, Manning and Rodgers could easily go off -- especially since Sean Smith, KC's best CB, is suspended the first three games.
