Wide Receiver Scoring Inflation

Each year it seems there are more wide receivers to draft who seem to be starting caliber fantasy receivers.  I was curious if this actually translated into more actual production.  Here are the top 60 scoring receivers from each of the last 12 years stacked up against each other.  Scoring is PPR.

Passing stats overall have been higher for about ten years now and particularly in the last five. What has changed most is the increase in points for those receivers outside of the upper elite since they are more involved. So there are more fantasy relevant receivers and the top wideouts - while still an advantage - don't have as much of a delta between them and the lower tiers.  Look at the spot above where the final WR with 200 points lie. That's been around  22-24 each year.

 

And in the end, the increase in scoring inside the position is less important than how it has changed how WR compares to other positions. QB passing is higher as well so they do better (as would be expected). RB's have taken it hard but mostly because of the division of rushing roles inside offenses. And even then, they have increased their receiving roles to make more of them relevant.

I thought that the inflation would be higher.  Especially among receivers 30-60.  When I entered drafts 10-15 years ago, there were only 20-30 receivers per year that I wanted on my team.  I rarely drafted a receiver in the lower rounds.  Many years I would draft 3 receivers in the first 4 rounds and not draft another one.   I would wait for free agency to create depth.  Now, there are 40-50 receivers who I like each year.  Clearly, a lot of the the receivers who I consider to have value now end up underachieving.

 

Passing stats are up.  But using 3 and 4 receiver sets is up, too.  Maybe it makes it more unpredictable to figure out who will produce.  Back when 2 receiver sets were used more often, second receivers who didn't have much talent put up stats because there were only two receiver options and the top receiver would likely be double-teamed.
