Stafford

I would pay him. He's one of the most entertaining players to watch in the NFL. You still need a QB to be successful in the NFL for the most part and he has the heart, if not all the physical tools, to be a winner. The Lions could not let him even think about walking. They are still reeling a bit as a franchise about CJ and Barry bailing on them and Stafford puts butts in the seats and Jersey's off the racks.

This is getting out of hand. By the end of this contract, the Lions will have paid Stafford a quarter of a billion dollars. And so far, he has one fewer playoff win than Brock Osweiler...

And the reason the Lions haven't won a playoff game is all on Stafford apparently, since nobody else gets W-L stats.

Is Derek Carr so much better, with only 3 years and a pretty awful W-L record and also zero playoff wins?  He got $25M/year, Stafford got 27, or about 8% more.

NFL QBs are valuable the going rate for an average to good one will continue to rise. The elite guys have long term contracts, and are often on a contending team where they may be convinced to take less pay to get that title. That ain't the case with DET.

Love how people talk about him being average, or just above average, like there are guys like him growing on trees that the Lions could grab for a song.

Average quarterbacks get paid in the NFL because the alternative is throwing away your season.

Yeah it's hard to argue with this but.....

At some point the Lions have to realize that they're nowhere near playoff contention. There are needs all over the place and being handcuffed with a QB taking a big chunk of salary cap space only limits your roster construction flexibility. You'll have your man at QB but that's about it.

Green Bay seems to have figured it out but Seattle and Indy haven't really. Brady's salary keeps going down so they can stay competitive. Not sure how sustainable it is for the Glennons of the world to command $18.5 million for basically a year's work.

Made the playoffs 2 of the past 3 years and not going to happen with a lot of the bottom feeding QB's in the league.  Stafford is a top 10 QB in the league.  The rest of the team has some glaring holes and a tough schedule coming out of the gate...but what is the other option.  Jake Rudock....puhlease!!

The reason isn't Stafford at all. In fact, Osweiler winning a playoff game despite being a turd is a testament to needing a good overall team in order to compete in the playoffs. The Derek Carr comparison's aren't fair. This was Carr's first mega deal, and he is still young. And it's highly likely that Carr would have a playoff win on his resume if he hadn't gotten hurt at the end of last year. The Raiders are closer than Detroit to competing for their conference (Brady isn't going to last forever, neither is Big Ben). They have a very strong offensive line, and Khalil Mack is a cornerstone of a defense that stands to improve this year. Detroit has holes everywhere on defense. No pass rush, no shutdown corners, mediocre LB play... They also have questions along their offensive line, and guys like Ebron and Marvin Jones just aren't cutting it. Hopefully Golladay emerges as a true #1 WR soon. I'd have rather seen the Lions franchise Stafford next year or trade him this year with the upcoming crop of QBs looking very strong for next year's draft. Save the $$$ and upgrade your defense. It's not just a cliche - it's true: Defense wins championships. The Lions aren't serious contenders for the NFC anyway - might as well break some eggs now to make a gourmet omelet in the future.
