Rashaad Penny

Bellcow or RBBC?

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/13143/rashaad-penny

Both coach Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider referred to first-round pick Rashaad Penny as a "three-down back" after drafting him.
It's particularly notable because Penny wasn't a high-volume receiver at San Diego State and was inconsistent in pass protection. Schneider said the Seahawks loved Penny so much they nearly drafted him at No. 18, but were able to find a trade partner and dip to No. 27, where they selected Penny. Schneider and Carroll did say Penny will have to iron out his blocking ups and downs, but Penny is markered in as Seattle's new bellcow. Apr 30 - 4:03 PM

He is going to have to prove he can catch and pass protect.  I think C.J. Prosise figures into the mix here.  And what about Chris Carson?  He looked pretty dynamic.

He's lumped into the Michel/Chubb/Jones mix this year.  All have question marks.

Lol, none of those other scrubs in the backfield will cut into Penny's workload.  He's going to be a bellcow.  The CS has stated they want to return to a smashmouth offense, and they spent a lot of capital on him.  That O-line also has gotten better this offseason as well.  I've been screaming Penny's name all offseason. Feels good B)

Care to explain this one?  The only O-line move all off season is a 5th round draft pick.

They added Fluker, and Duane Brown will be a part of the team for the whole year.  There's no way they shouldn't be a bit better this year.  He also comes into a situation with the best QB at the helm.

Their starting tackle was lost during preseason last year and should be good to go this year.  They also signed Dickson and drafted Dissly who is described as a 5th lineman specialist in the TE position.  Who knows how much and how fast the running game improves, but it will be a substantially different scheme and staff compared to last year.

In rookie draft?  I think that's totally fair and warranted.  I think Barkley and Penny have the most certainty surrounding their role than any other RB in the class.

Depends on the makeup of your team.  If you're one starting RB away from instant contention, yeah then maybe you take Penny.  If you're looking to the future I would say Guice is the guy.  Heck, some could even say Guice has a pretty clear path too.  Perine and the like are JAGs, I think.

Thompson is far from a JAG, and will be the 3rd down back, as well as possibly more for as long as he's there.  He's dynamic on the field, and DC loves him.  Guice would be my #4 behind Freeman.

I should have been more specific.  Perine and Kelley are JAGs.  There will always be a role for Thompson.  You're right - he's super dynamic.  But I think there's room for both him and Guice to produce fantasy-wise.

If I have 1.02 Guice is the pick, regardless of how good/bad my team is.

And yeah, rookie draft, I hope it's too early for the redraft crowds..

1.03 will be guice, leaving me otc at 4 - needing a whole bunch of help everywhere on this orphan

Back to Penny... the more I read, the more I like.  If he can pick up pass-blocking in a jiffy he could be a year one RB2, maybe better.

That said, I still like Chris Carson.  I'd like him more if he wasn't "just" a 7th round draft pick.

Hawks taking Penny where they did really means something.

TBH, I think Carson will just be insurance for Penny atm, and provide a water break if needed.  And I really liked him last year too... Penny is a stud, with the pedigree to boot.

And yeah, I agree with your other post.  Guice will definitely get first crack as well as get his, and will take over Perine's role from last year.  I just honestly don't like Redskins offense and how it's being run.  I think they're worse off than last year too.

Thompson will be 28 this year, is coming off a torn ACL, and has never caught more than 39 passes nor had more than 68 carries in a year.  His receiving pace last year screams outlier and his YPC of 13.1 is unsustainable.  He's a JAG and while Guice may be eased into 3 down role, he's going to get there very soon.

Fluker is poorly rated with an injury history.  Not sure how more time will help Duane, don't think he was really having problems running the appropriate blocks last year.

I know Fant was having a good camp last year, but that's all there is at this point.  He was not good in 2016 and is not assured to even be a starter this year as it looks like he'll be competing with Ifedi who was again not good last year.

I guess that's my major hang up here, other then Duane its been two years of bad line and all those players are still there and expected to be used.  I'm glad they have more blocking TEs now, but that still doesn't fix 4 bad starters.  If it turns out differently I'll come back here and eat my words, but at this point I think any runner behind that line is (the really bad word)ed, and worse worry they will get Russel killed.

Yeah, that ACL injury sure stymied Le'Veon Bell and Keenan Allen.  Spare me the conjecture.  Skill players can recover just fine from ACL injuries, and if the coaching staff thinks he's ready and fine to play this season, he will have that 3rd down role.  That bolded part... you won't find many experts, or people in general that would agree with you on that.  He's by far one of the best satellite backs in the league.

Regardless, bellcow.  Penny and Barkley are the most sure fire bets to get 3 downs.  Which is the question posed at the beginning of the thread.  Freeman and Jones are the next closest bets.

I really like Penny. I guess it can be legitimately argued that the system he comes from inflates RB production, but this is a guy with legit field speed(as evidenced by his 8 return TD's)... and although he doesn't look particularly big on film he goes 5'11" 220... pretty much the sweet spot for NFL RB.

As far as Seattle that's a mixed bag IMO. I agree that he doesn't have any real competition... I think that's proven by the Seahawks taking a RB early in a very deep draft at the position while in possession of a roster that's being turned over and needing talent everywhere... for 1, they have a bad line, could possibly be better but just incrementally IMO... 2, Russell Wilson doesn't have much talent to pass to that takes pressure off his running game... and 3, their defense is gutted, and I'm sure they'll be playing catch up constantly.

this could all mean lottsa dump offs and draws and stuff with Penny being the absolute focal point of the offense(likely, they don't have much talent)... could also mean Penny's bottled up by poor line play and shut out by the constant need to try and make plays happen downfield as the Seahawks play from behind..

I do believe in his talent as a three down player tho and was interested in the Raiders picking him.
