I know some motorsports events (Formula One, the motorcycling equivalent MotoGP) have been cancelled, or closed to spectators. But those are very large scale international events. In MotoGP case many teams/riders are from Italy, and would not be able to race in various places if an event was held because many countries are requiring a 14 day quarantine after entering the country. I'm on a sports and broadcasting forum where there has been a lot of discussion of impact on sports, and it was mentioned that the NFL may need to consider what they do for the draft. Somebody even suggested that players would not be allowed to hug or shake hands with Goodell. PS Thanks to those who got the headline corrected, its bad enough the media does this, lets not contribute to the spread of false information. It is one reason I usually try to read or at least skim any linked story as I've found people to completely misrepresent what they linked. Not to sound like trump, but 8 billion on the earth, and 125,000 infectious less than 10,000 deaths. Yes, it needs to be taken seriously, no, it's not the worst thing to happen, just new and with uncertainty comes panic. Look around you, everyone here is still coming to work, folks are still shopping, the phones are still ringing and we are moving on and doing what we need to be doing. The markets have dropped, the wealthiest aren't nearly as wealthy, but my house is still there, some.money still in my bank account, and my house is still standing, all fairly good things. My family is still near me, my kids are safe as are my parents. Life is a terminal disease, and we are all still strong today, it will pass. Just to note: Not saying concerns are bad or unwarranted (near life long Type 1 diabetic that stupidly smoked for around 25 years), but there's a line between reasonable and extreme and can't help but think maybe we have crossed it. stevegrab Posted March 12, 2020 Share Posted March 12, 2020 The overall mortality rate may not be very high, but for people over 70 or 80 it is very high, believe it was 15% for over 80 when I saw the numbers a couple days ago. If people are panicking that is on them, nobody is creating a panic for them. Those people rushing out to stores to stock up on things like TP because they hear other are doing it and fear being left out are just lemmings. This is a real serious issue, not some fabricated nonsense. A bunch of sports and other things will be cancelled, life will continue. Luckily, I can work from home, as well as my wife, who has a compromised immune system, so it is actually a bit of a blessing. But geez, talk about hunkering down...this whole thing is mind boggling out of control! Worst part is there are no sports to watch while stuck at home... The kids all have Chromebooks that they take home and can school from home. I'm fortunate that my wife is a stay at home Mom, but what about Mothers who work full time? Any decision is going to be highly scrutinized and people's personal situations will greatly influence their perspective. There are robust stats that show social distancing is the best way to deal with a pandemic. I'm hoping the numbers take a dive when the warmer weather comes. Many others are facing a two week or more quarantine, stuck on cruise ships or in a foreign land for periods, actually sick with the virus and fighting for their lives, loss of income from their job, or maybe even the end to some jobs (as some hard hit businesses will surely close). And of course anybody with retirement funds are going to take a hit. If you cannot find something else to distract yourself with in today's era of online entertainment, you're probably not trying. PS So far health experts say there is no real way to know if things will drastically improve as it warms up, even though that is the case with the flu and other viruses. It's not the Plague, if you get it your symptoms will likely be very mild. Most won't even know they have it. For the elderly it's another story. We are about 10 days behind Italy with this virus so it should really ramp up next week, peaking in about 2 weeks. Being a virus it will eventually weaken and burn itself out as all viruses do. If you are going to get it, hope that you get it in a few weeks when it's significantly weaker. We'll be back on our feet by June if all goes well, Godspeed.
