Kbraz
In last nights game, H. Douglas was credited for a sack in the 4th quarter, but on the play Douglas was flagged for tripping the quarterback. The penalty was enforced.... should the sack be eliminated? This one point swing will prove to be meaningful in our league.. From NFL.com boxscore: "P.Ramsey sacked at WAS 37 for -2 yards (H.Douglas). PENALTY on PHI-H.Douglas, Tripping, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 37"
soopanuts
I was thinking the same thing...it's actually quite meaningful in my league as well.
LegFuJohnson
Flag on the play, sack didn't happen. I wouldn't think that sack would be in the box score... Was it?
soopanuts
It is still in there...
Kbraz
Flag on the play, sack didn't happen. I wouldn't think that sack would be in the box score... Was it? 608093[/snapback] Here is an explanation I received from the AP: The official NFL Gamebook still credits Douglas with a sack, so I have no reason to think it's wrong. The fact that it says the penalty was enforced at the WAS 37 instead of the 39 tells me that the trip happened after the sack occurred, ie, they counted the sack, then marked off the penalty. 2-4-WAS 39 (7:19) 11-P.Ramsey sacked at WAS 37 for -2 yards (53-H.Douglas). PENALTY on PHI-53-H.Douglas, Tripping, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 37. But, how can the trip which caused the sack happen after the sack? soopanuts
I agree...they need to fix that one.
Hugh-mongus
Here's the series from NFL.com: 1-10-WAS33 (7:52) P.Ramsey pass to C.Portis to WAS 39 for 6 yards (J.Trotter). 2-4-WAS39 (7:19) P.Ramsey sacked at WAS 37 for -2 yards (H.Douglas). PENALTY on PHI-H.Douglas, Tripping, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 37. 1-10-WAS47 (7:06) C.Portis left end to PHI 45 for 8 yards (B.Dawkins). 2-2-PHI45 (6:29) C.Portis up the middle to PHI 44 for 1 yard (M.Lewis). 3-1-PHI44 (5:45) C.Portis right tackle to PHI 44 for no gain (J.Trotter). 4-1-PHI44 (5:09) T.Tupa punts 44 yards to end zone, Center-E.Albright, Touchback. After being flagged for tripping on the play, I couldn't imagine that Douglas would be credited with a sack, but one appeared in his stat line. Also, if you look at the bold above, the 10 yard penalty was enforced from the 37 yard line, which is where Ramsey was sacked. Based on this, it looks like the sack counts. Very surprising! How can you credit a guy with a sack when he accomplishes it by tripping the QB? Edited December 13, 2004 by Hugh-mongus
LegFuJohnson
Interesting. Then maybe it is a sack. If a runner runs from the 30 yard line to the 40, and you trip him... They'll enforce the penalty from the 40, give them the ball at midfield. But I guess you still would be credited with the tackle. Someone has to. CaptainHook
Hmm, I too thought it would negate the sack. It appears it does not. Does the same apply on a facemask, I wonder? If you sack the QB by the facemask, is it a 15 yard penalty from the spot of the foul, or the line of scrimmage?
sundaynfl
I believe that the penalty is from the spot of the foul and a player gets credited with the tackle, which in this case was a sack.
