Question regarding dynasty drafts

Recommended Posts

I have seen several people state they are in dynasty leagues that have two drafts each year, one for rookies, one for free agents.

my question is what is the point of this?

I guess it is one of those things i just don't get the point of and was hoping to get some input as to the reasons for using a split draft, the strategical impact of such a system and the benefit to the competitive balance of a league that separate drafts can bring to the table vs. having a single draft for any player not on a roster.

Very much so........  maybe tonight if I am lucky.

LOL. FWIW, imo, if you are going to draft free agents, it has to be separate from the rookie draft. The rookie draft is its own entity, where careful planning and strategizing plays a major role in the future of your team. Picking up some scrub free agents who aren't good enough to be on anyones roster is completely different imo. Rookies have much more potential than free agents.

Did that make sense? :D

And good luck tonight. :D

So then what is the harm of having all players eligible for placement on a team be eligible to be drafted in the same draft.

In USDA, we have 14 teams, 21-man rosters, so the veterans available are very limited, but there is usually at least a couple that are taken in the first couple rounds of our draft. Granted, it may be a kicker or a 2nd/3rd year QB that is a backup currently, but the owner obviously felt that they had a more pressing needfor that player over a rookie.

I guess I just don't see a benefit to separating the player pool like that. Only thing that comesto mind is making it "like the NFL", whih if taken too far can ruin a good league.

In a dynasty league, someone would take a kicker over a 2nd or 3rd round rookie draft pick? That seems absurd. This is a dynasty league we're talking about, right?

The more I think about this, the more things come to mind. Part of the allure of dynasty leagues is the ability to have a rookie draft each year where owners can show their "prowess" in drafting rookie talent. That should be kept separate from any FA transactions. Also, I would be hard pressed to find any FA worth more than any rookie in any of my dynasty leagues, so that's probably why it really isn't even an option for most leagues.

That being said, I see no problem with making it an option, I just don't see a real need for it.

Did that make sense? :D

i am in one dynasty league where you have a 35 man roster, no contracts, then you have to cut down to 25. We then have a ten round rookie/FA draft. Here was the draft last year: (the defense of the team I took over sucked and I had no backup qb, so i mostly byypassed rookies)

If you aren't using contracts, then there is no 'RFA' period.
