Marcus Washington moving MLB?

Recommended Posts

From Len Pasquarelli's Tip Sheet today on ESPN.com:

• Nice, modestly-priced pickup by the Washington Redskins this week, signing former Chicago and Cleveland linebacker Warrick Holdman to what is believed to be a one-year contract. The six-year veteran hasn't been, over the last couple seasons, the same player he was for the Bears early in his career. But Holdman is still just 29 years old, knows how to play the game, and Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will figure a way to make good use of him. The acquisition of Holdman, who has played all three linebacker spots at various junctures of his career, almost certainly will make Mike Barrow expendable. The veteran middle 'backer missed the entire 2004 campaign and Washington probably will jettison him after June 1, when it needs salary cap space to sign its draft choices. Holdman might join the group of linebackers vying for the starting job in the middle, where the defection of Antonio Pierce to the New York Giants as a free agent has created a big hole. But don't discount the possibility that the Redskins will move strong-side linebacker and 2004 Pro Bowl performer Marcus Washington into the middle, and use Holdman to fill his slot. When they were recruiting Washington last spring as a free agent, Redskins coaches floated the idea of playing him in the middle, and it could happen. Regardless of who lines up where, the addition of Holdman gives Williams a lot of flexibility, assuming LaVar Arrington returns whole from the injuries that limited him to just four games a year ago.

Gotta tend to agree with Rovers. Holdman is definitely a nice, cheap pickup for the 'Skins, but if I were Gregg Williams, he'd be backup fodder.

Immediately? Or would that be Lemar Marshall ...

The Skins say there are 4-5 people competing for the spot ...

I know the position is up in the air, so it may not be Washington. Will be interesting to see, though. He'd be awesome there.

That MLB spot in Wash is more than a little muddled.... McCune WILL be the MLB, just a question of when. Will Barrow be a June 1 cut? Quite possible. Is Arrington really healthy? It's a mess, and cant be projected, at this point, as far as I am concerned.

Wow. I cannot see that happening. Washington is just a natural OLB. With all the problems the Colts have had at middle linebacker (because Rob Morris sucks) it would be something to see BOTH guys who played on either side of him at middle linebacker for other teams. Mike Peterson was switched from weakside to MLB when he signed with Jax. If Washington does it too. . .

Petersons days in the middle may be numbered now.

I think Sarge is hoping Daryl Smith takes over the Jax MLB job. :D

The guys to pick up from the 'Skins LB corps, in order of dynasty value, are:

McCune

Washington

Arrington (dropped below MW b/c of injury concerns)

Barrow (if he's healthy and they don't cut him this year)

Holdman and Marshall are both backup OLB types who IMHO don't figure into the middle. McCune has the most value because he figures to be the MLB for many years in a system that funnels tackles to the MLB. The only downside is that he doesn't figure to start right away.

If indeed Washington is moved to MLB, then that should only be a temporary move to allow them to both cut Barrow and enable McCune to learn enough to step in. But it seems like that would be the most disruptive thing they could do as it would lead to all three LB's either being backups or playing out of position if Arrington is not healthy. I'd figure that they'll leave Washington at the Sam, Arrington or Marshall will start the season at Will, and Holdman or maybe Marshall will start at MLB with McCune stepping in as soon as possible.

If Barrow's healthy enough to play this year, he'll likely start for the entire season but will certainly be gone afterwards and McCune will start at MLB in 2006. Barrow could be a good sleeper redraft or dynasty one year fill-in candidate if he's healthy . . .

redman, that is pretty much the way I see it too. In a perfect world, Arrington and Barrow are healthy, and Washington stays on the outside. McCune steps into the middle in 2006. I think June 1 will tell us if the Skins think Barrow will be able to play this year.
