Mike Doss to be suspended. . .

Recommended Posts

Starting safety Mike Doss will be suspended without pay for at least one regular-season game this season in the wake of his conviction on two misdemeanor gun charges, Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian said Tuesday.

The Colts open Sept. 11 at Baltimore against the Ravens. Polian indicated the suspension could be more than one game, and said the announcement would be made within the week.

"We need to check some details with the league office to make sure we're in compliance with league policy," Polian said after the Colts concluded a summer school workout at the Union Federal Football Center.

He reiterated that discipline is "going to be strong" and that it's important for the team to "send a strong message" that such conduct will not be tolerated.

Doss, the team's second-round draft pick in 2003 who has started 24 games the past two seasons, will forfeit one paycheck for each game missed.

That's $22,353, 1/17th of his base salary of $380,000.

He returned to practice Tuesday after appearing in an Akron, Ohio, court Monday and pleading no contest to two misdemeanor gun charges. He was found guilty of both and received a suspended sentence, community service and a fine. Doss did not meet with the media after practice.

Meanwhile, the team still is gathering facts regarding the arrest of cornerback Nick Harper on Saturday on a charge of domestic battery. He also faces possible team and/or NFL discipline, although that likely will take much more time to determine than with Doss because it's a domestic issue.

"We want to make a fast decision in Nick's case," coach Tony Dungy said, "but we don't want to make the wrong decision not having the facts."

Harper also was back at practice Tuesday and apologized for "embarrassing" his family, the Colts organization, his teammates and fans.

"My lawyers and the judiciary system are going to handle everything," he said. "We're just going to take it from there."
