twiley
Ours is wood. Gas is convenient but lacks the nostalgia of the wood fireplace.

Tford
If you can get cheap, but quality burning firewood, wood burning is handsdown better IMO. Edited January 25, 2007 by Tford
isleseeya
wood ..always ... nothing like splinters and furry animals making home in your wood pile ..still would not trade it for gas
Scoops5150
Nothing beats real firewood!! The inlaws bought a propane fireplace from Home Depot this Christmas. I was impressed with the heat it gave off and yet you could touch the sides and it was safe to sit stuff on top of it. I think it was like $250 for everything. 20 lb tank included. The Holy Roller
You've had problems getting wood, have you? He said wood in the arse is a pain. Or sumthin'. We have FOUR-COUNT'EM-FOUR wood burning fireplaces in the HR palace. We use one mainly. Real wood is the best in my opinion. It is work but nothing is nicer than laying in front of one and my dog comes up to lay in front of it. Then my grandson comes up to lay on the dog. I live a good life. I live a good life. Wow! I thought I had it good. 3 wood burning fireplaces in the nogo house (including one large one in the living room) and one wood stove in the kitchen that will also handle coal - can be used for cooking in an emergency. Life is good!
whoopazz
You've had problems getting wood, have you? I suppose I've gotten lazy. I enjoy the convenience of our gas logs and don't miss turning and adjusting the logs, or cleaning up. Regarding the availability of wood, I am approaching

TimC
Gas is the only way to go. If you go with one in the bedroom, make sure to get the option 40" Sony LCD over it.
keggerz
we currently have a gas fireplace and its ok...but when i was a kid we had a real fireplace...nothing like a real fire...but there is a trade off for the convenience of gas....when i was a kid we had an airtight wood burning stove in the basement that we used to heat the house and a reg. fireplace in the front room(we didnt call it a family room back then)... now there was the time I almost burned down my dads log cabin...he had an airtight wood burning stove in his living room(14' vaulted ceiling)...well anyway it was christmas eve(no Sega! true story)...my sister and I were there but my dad was at the philadelphia airport clearing snow(he drove truck for a company that had a contract)....well something happened and the heat in the house broke(before I got there and while my dad was away)...so I called him and he said to get the stove going just to be careful with it...so as I put some wood in it I heard the dog bark out back so my sis and I went to look but it was nothing....i get back to the living room and the pipe from the stove is HOT RED(orangish) from about the top of the stove to about 8' up...the damn thing was taking in the air where i left the door cracked and just made the fire rage....so now i am freaking out and I am afraid i have the chimney on fire...i go outside to see flames and sparks shooting out the top and sparks(big ones) landing on the roof...good thing for me there was about 4-6" of snow on the roof or the house would have caught fire no doubt in my mind....the house was full of smoke...my sister called a friend that lived near by that was a fireman....luckily other then a ton of smoke and a GLOWING Chimney pipe(what is it really called?) everything was ok...but man i really thought i was gonna burn my dads house down on Xmas Eve....I didnt tell him for like 4 or 5 years that I almost burned his house down...possibly the most scared i ever was in my entire life(during the almost fire not telling my dad ) Edited January 25, 2007 by keggerz
Perchoutofwater
We have wood. I love the look and smell of it, but would much rather have gas fireplace. Wood is a pain in the arse, and doesn't put out as much heat as gas. Had I built my house in lieu of buying an existing house I would have gone with gas. Unfortunately the only gas in my house is that that comes out of my arse.

Hat Trick
I have 2 wood burning Fireplaces and LOVE them! I have 500 acres of land with all the free wood I can cut. The fireplaces have a temp regulated blower on them. It heats the whole house in the winter months and is top of the line. Nobody has a blower on there fireplace like this that I know of, installed in 79' and still works just as good as it did then (I bought the house I grew up in and that my father designed and built). Gas is the devil.....my bills are WAY cheaper on electric than gas.

And that darn Asian-bird-flu that kills people could possibly become a problem with TOO MANY TURKEYS around. For a small fee I will come out, say around the middle of April, and check out your situation and, ahem, make sure there's nuthin' too dangerous in those woods. For a small fee. Shoot, for a fellow Huddler, I'll do it for FREE! Edited January 26, 2007 by The Holy Roller
