  1. Today I was driving to work and I saw a bumper-sticker that made me think that the person who was driving the car was a moran. I then started thinking about other bumper-stickers I had seen that made me feel the same way. Here are a few of them: "Women are born leaders... You're following one now" "I smoke and I vote" "Mondale/Ferraro" (Seen on a 2000-something Honda in the faculty parking lot at my university) "W--04" "Don't let the car fool you, my treasure is in Heaven"
  2. Albert Einstein once said, "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man." Now, go google "Colony Collapse Disorder". For extra credit, go read Cormac McCarthy's book The Road. Sleep well.
  3. Aqua, we will truly miss you.

  4. Maria Sharapova vs. Ana Ivanovic in the French Open Semifinals on (I think) Thursday. YWIA
  5. Forget what we know now and concentrate on what life (and our outlook about what life would be like in the future) was like back then: The Cold War is over--we won and are now the world's lone superpower (no longer need to fear "The Day After") The Gulf War ends with our crushing defeat of the world's 4th largest army in six weeks. The Economy is booming. Home computers and the internet become commonplace. Almost nobody is thinking about antibiotic resistant infections. Almost nobody is really thinking about terrorism. (The first WTC attack and the Oklahoma City bombing are considered horrible aberations and not something that we really need to worry about all that much.) Our biggest crises is seemingly that the president got a BJ. Did any society in the history of mankind have any reason to feel happier and more optimistic about the future than we did back then? (And note, this has NOTHING to do with who was president or who controlled Congress during the decade.)
  6. Lindsay Lohan arrested AGAIN

I think she needs a spanking.
  7. Another chat about health care costs

    :high five:
  8. But at the time (the 1950s) people didn't know that a nuclear war wasn't going to happen.
  9. so what's up ?

    should we remember you?
  10. Treated lumber

    Perch made me chuckle.
  11. So, what should I wear to meet dmd?

I'm guessing that wearing a fedora to this meeting would be akin to wearing a bikini into prison. You can decide if that is good or bad on your own.
  12. you forgot about prohibition (good call on the other stuff though)
  13. tono....i wouldnt recommend this on your trip

    "see the plight, kids?"
  14. I need a math expert please

I know seniors in college that can't do it.
  15. Another chat about health care costs

People are willing to give up other goods and services to get them, hence by a revealed preference argument, they are definitely benefiting the general human condition.
  16. Which wine should I drink tonight?

well, at the risk of completely embarrassing myself since detlef has also tasted the wine, here goes: I thought it was very smooth and balanced with berries, tar and leather(?) being the primary aromas I got from it. It had pleasant tannis with a long finish. Overall, very enjoyable! (now, if detlef wants to come back and give a real assessment, I would actually appreciate it so that I can see where I went wrong.)
  17. Bridge to Tarabithia

uh--you guys ever heard of a "spoiler warning"?
  18. No it doesn't. It applies to any particular time and place in the history of the world. If somebody wants to put forth an argument that, say, Ireland in the 1960s was the best place-time to live, have at it. I think it is pretty easy to exclude Russia, China, Iraq, and any place in Africa no matter what time period we are talking about. I would also exclude any time period prior to the 1950s because they didn't have antibiotics back then and any minor infection could quickly end up killing you or your kids.
