10 man Rd 2 &3 draft strategy

Recommended Posts

I draft #2 in a 10-man league that starts 2QB, 3RB, 4WR, K, TE, D. I'm going LT or S.A. first. My question is what should I do at picks 19 & 22? I'm torn between RB/WR or WR/WR. Here are my thoughts:

RB/WR

-Could still land Jordan/Jackson/Westbrook type and a top 5 WR

-If lucky, could get Joneses or R.Johnson, can I pass them up?

-RB falloff after 16 is pretty dramatic. If I skipped RB, next would be at pick 39 and I'm looking at 20+ rank range for my #2RB.

WR/WR

-RB is in the 14-18 rank range, while instead I could get 2 top 6 WRs

-After the Jordan/Jackson/Westbrook group, there are number of RBs all about the same in potential and I could probably fill my needs there: Dunn/Barlow/Taylor/Foster/Rookies

-Taking 2 WRs puts me in front of the likely Rd 3&4 WR run and should leave me with options at RB

-Leaves me needing to take RB at 39 and 42 and there are questions on the guys that will likely be there. Do I want to rely on them as #2&3 RBs? Or am I covered w/a top 2 RB and 2 top 6 WRs?

Any thoughts on the better strategy?

If this is a new league to you, you will soon realize the importance (and difficulty) of getting two quality QBs in your line-up each week.

I ahve been in a league with this format for 14 seasons, and without fail, everyone has at least one QB on their roster by the end of round 3. And ours is only an eight-team league.

With your second pick, I'd target a Green/Favre/Brady type of player, knowing that you will have no problem filling in WRs....they are a dime a dozen.

Thus, you should be able to end up with LT/SA as your first selection, QB at 2, and a WR like Holt/Horn/Johnson with your 3 pick. You should still be able to get a viable RB with your 4th selection (Cadillac, Duce...someone ranked 20-25)), and your 2nd QB with your 5th round selection(Delhomme, McNair, etc...someone ranked 15-20).

Also stockpile starting QBs with late-round picks...you'll be amazed the value they carry in a lueague like this. Remember, in a 10-team league, there will be 20 QBs started every week (and there are only 32 teams in the league). With injuries and benchings always a factor, you'll be amazed the trade-value a QB will have in this type of format.

Good Luck! :D

Good luck.

I have to agree with swammi. You should be drafting RB/WR/QB or RB/QB/WR. By the time it gets back to you in the 4th round a lot of QBs will be taken. Around 7 or 8 you will need to have your second QB in place to and don't forget you wll need a third one for bye weeks. Since this league uses 20 starting QB and 30 starting RB they will be at a premium.

Once you have drafted your RB at #2, the position scarcity for each of RB, QB, and WR will appear to be identical, as you will still have to fill 2 starting QB spots, 2 starting RB spots, and 4 starting WR spots. However, the actual scarcity will obviously depend upon who has been drafted through the first 18 picks. Go with the flow of the draft; don't set any plans in stone beforehand, and don't get caught up in position runs. If alot of RBs go early, for instance, I'd go QB/WR at 19/22, unless a RB you really like is still on the board.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it all. But I just don't see the QB value. Maybe that's because in the past, they've gone relatively late (this will be my 3rd year in this league). Only 8 QBs went in the first 4 rounds last year. Based on past trends, I'd expect to see the first 2 rounds have 15 RBs selected, along w/Manning, Culpepper, McNabb, Moss & TO. At my spot, based on last year's QBs, in the 4th rd. I could have grabbed Favre, Pennington, Brooks. Also, Delhomme went in the 7th and Plummer in the 11th!

Last year, I got Brady in rd. 5 and Carr in rd 6. This year, after the big 3 above, I really don't see much difference until you hit the dregs (Grossman, Leftwich etc.) I guess I'm just not high on T.Green or Bulger who many lists have very high up.

Ironically, QBs dominate our scoring in our league, but for whatever reason, they don't go until later. For that reason, I ususally do go with the flow and grab other positions before there are none left.

So, maybe I should rephrase my question to make it more general: do you think a #16 RB and top 6 WR are more valuable than 2 top 6 WRs?
