Law to sign with Jets

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Jets and free-agent Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law have reached an agreement in principle on a multiyear deal, which is contingent on Law passing a physical, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions.

"It's done," one person said.

Jets assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum and Law's agent, Carl Poston, met Thursday night and agreed to many of the parameters of a deal and are now trying to fine-tune the contract. They negotiated throughout the day yesterday.

The deal is believed to include a signing bonus of $5 million to $6 million and average roughly $6 million per season. It is said to be incentive-rich and heavily backloaded. Law will come to New York for a physical early next week.

At issue had been the back end of the deal. The Law camp is said to have agreed on bonus money and first-year salary early on in the talks. Law was reportedly seeking a deal averaging between $6 million and $7 million per season.

Also at issue is that Law wants to get paid if he performs and the Jets want to protect themselves if he doesn't.

The Jets may have to rework several contracts and perhaps even release a veteran or two to make any deal work under the salary cap. One player who might be adversely affected is cornerback Ray Mickens.

Law, 31, is coming off a foot injury that caused him to miss nine games last season. He claims to be fully healthy but some NFL insiders think he might be less than 100 percent and will never be the player he once was. He has worked out for the Chiefs, Jaguars and Lions.

Last season, Law turned down a four-year, $24 million offer from New England, which released him in February for salary cap reasons. Law has found that teams have been reluctant to meet his demands.

While the Chiefs, Jaguars or Lions may be able to pay Law more than the Jets, Law's relationship with Jets coach Herman Edwards, running back Curtis Martin and secondary coach Corwin Brown plus his desire to play for a winner gave the Jets an edge.

Martin, who played with Law in New England, has actively recruited him, talking to him almost daily. The pair are very close.

Law, a four-time Pro Bowl and three-time Super Bowl champion, will start opposite David Barrett. He's the shut-down cornerback the Jets have been searching for since the departure of Aaron Glenn in 2002. He'll replace Donnie Abraham, who retired.

The arrival of Law means the veteran Mickens, if he remains, will return to his customary nickel back position. Mickens, who has longed to start, has said he'll welcome a player of Law's caliber. ...

Once again, the Steelers miss an opportunity to bring in a hometown kid with talent. They bring in Mike Logan (Who? Exactly. From McKeesport) and pass on Ty Law (Aliquippa). Need I remind anyone of the Marino/Rivera call? I'm sure Senor Sack would have been a good ball player for the black and gold, but come on...MARINO? Good for Law and the Jets (who, coincidentally, have Curtis Martin...from PITTSBURGH, a Pitt grad and was last year's rushing champ). :doah: :doah: :doah: :doah: :doah: :doah: :doah:

You now have an ex-Pat in your division. Welcome to the new AFC East. You will finish second in your division this year.

Does this mean that all the Jets need to pass the Pats are ex Patriots?

I'm not sure I'm following your post.

I'm guessing (And I'm no expert) but the JETS will need a lot more than a Ty Law to pass the PATS!

Back 2 Back 2 Back!

As indicative of yer avatar, you are comfushed. New DC, no OC, bad practices (according to Brady) no Teddy, no Andruzzi, no Law, and another starting LB that decided to bail out before the roof came down.... there is a limit to what even BB can do.... and the Pats have hit that limit!

LAW'S READY TO JOIN JETS

DONE DEAL: Former Patriots star Ty Law has agreed to sign a three-year deal worth $23 million to beef up Jets' secondary.

By BRIAN LEWIS and STEVE SERBY

August 8, 2005 -- The Jets' secondary just got a whole lot better, and their defense a whole lot more dominating.

Ty Law, a three-time Super Bowl winner and four-time Pro Bowler, is set to become the newest member of Gang Green, The Post has learned.

"It's a done deal," a Jets insider told The Post last night after the 31-year-old free agent cornerback had spent the afternoon on Long Island at the team's Hempstead training complex.

The $23 million deal had been held up because the Jets had wanted a clause to protect them in the event that Law reinjured his foot. He'd suffered a so-called Lisfranc fracture last Oct. 31 at Pittsburgh that had required the insertion of screws to stabilize the foot, and cost him all but seven games last season.

He'd turned down a four-year, $24 million offer from New England, and the Super Bowl champions eventually released him in February for obvious salary-cap reasons. The screws were removed from his foot in the spring, and if he is healthy, he immediately adds a swagger to a defense that already has an attitude.

Just ask the Giants.

He'd been adamant about not accepting a minimum-salary deal, and expected to be paid like a Pro Bowler. It seems after days of intense negotiations and haggling between super agent Carl Poston and Jets assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum from Thursday through the weekend, the club will give him a three-year deal worth $6 million per season and a $5 million signing bonus.

Law's close relationship with running back Curtis Martin and secondary coach Corwin Brown — both of whom he played with in New England — helped close the deal, as did his respect and admiration for Herm Edwards, a fantastic recruiter who deals well with players.

Law and Edwards have spoken during the offseason, and Law also has a 5-year-old daughter, Tya, who lives in New York. And, of course, Law would have the basest of incentives to sign with the Jets: Revenge.

He will get to play the Patriots at least twice a year, and can help Gang Green in their quests of unseating New England atop the AFC East and becoming the best defense in football.

As far as the Jets' interest in Law, that much is obvious.

If he's healthy — and he has been working diligently for months with Miami-based SportFit Rehab and Training — he instantly will step into the lineup at left cornerback and replace Ray Mickens, the nickelback who had been thrust into the void left when Donnie Abraham retired two weeks ago to spend more time with his family and pursue business interests.

At the moment, the Jets have only rookie Justin Miller, a second-round choice, and they signed cornerbacks Brandon Haw and Roosevelt Williams last Tuesday to help get through a stretch of injuries.

That all could change as soon as today, when they are expected to sign up one of the best defensive backs in the game.

Seriously. If the Pats don't repeat this year, I don't think that Ty Law will be the reason. The Pats have quite a learning curve going on this year as it is.

31 year old corner.

Missed 10 games due to a foot injury.

Couldn't make the KC squad because of his physicals.

Why should anybody worry?  Only Ty should, because he won't be earning many of those incentives.

The Pats repeated (is that a word?) last year. This year it would be a Three-peat. :D

They also played 12 games without Law last year, and did OK. They have Starks, along with the most of the crew that filled in last year.

Pats should be great again this year. The Jets need more than a gimpy Ty Law. :D
