WaterMan
Panthers TE Freddie Jones announces retirement August 7, 2005 SPARTANBURG, South Carolina (Ticker) - Less than four months after signing with the Carolina Panthers, tight end Freddie Jones has decided to call it a career. The Panthers announced Sunday that the eight-year veteran has retired. Jones, who turns 31 in September, spent his last three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals after playing his first five campaigns with the San Diego Chargers. He signed a one-year, $690,000 contract with the Panthers on April 20. ADVERTISEMENT "It was in the best interest of family that I conclude my career at this time," Jones said. In 123 career games, Jones caught 404 passes for 4,232 yards and 22 touchdowns. He set career highs in 2000 in receptions (71), yards (766) and touchdowns (five). Dr. Sacrebleu
...and I was ruing not having drafted Jones in 32 Homers. been a little out of the loop this sumer, and failed to even ralize that he had signed with Carolina was even considering trading Jeramy Stevens for Jones Still don't understand how people sign with new teams just before retiring. Does it make a difference financially?
CaptainHook
Two years in a row this has happened to Carolina now. Last year it was former Colt Adam Meadows that signed and then retired. PantherDave
Well, we are now officially the place some come to retire, but Coach Fox requires his TE to block, and block well, and to put it mildly-it was never Fred's strong point. He was being coached "how to block" from what I've gleaned from the homesite, and some times it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. whomper
There goes my back up TE.. Witten is my starter. This is why I hate drafting until preseason is almost over..Injuries and this type of thing . Edited August 8, 2005 by whomper

PantherDave
This is basically what you had going on here, FJ was not brought in as the #1 TE, which means he was the #2 most likely. Well, in Panther camp, the #2 O has to go head to head with the # 1 D, and the Panthers go full pads from day 1 in TC. So, basically FJ was attempting to block either Rucker or Pep-that alone could force someone into retirement. Peace PD.

They must have some sobering training camps down there.
