Recommended Posts

Sep 1 The Star-Ledger reports New York Jets TE Chris Baker has apparently held off TE Doug Jolley for the starting job.

If this is true it sucks :D

Aw :D

I had Jolley pegged as a great sleeper pick - he's so much better than Baker.

edit: it seems Baker will be used primarily as blocker, while Jolley will be more involved with the receiving - let's hope....

Baker has shown a surprising ability to run routes and he has good hands. He is a better blocker than Jolley, and having a second year ORT (Adrian Jones, who is a virtual rookie) makes blocking even more of a concern.

The Jets will run some 2 TE sets, and Jolley will also get time in the one TE formations too. Jolley is also playing H-Back, and often gets split wide and goes in motion in 4 WR sets out of the shotgun. Baker being named the starter will cut into Jolley's numbers, but how much is the question. Heimerdinger will have to play both TE's in the single TE set so as not to give away the play call(run/pass).

My best guess is about 80 completions to the TE this year, with Baker and Jolley getting most of those. How the split works out is the tough part to figure.
