Volek will start vs. Cardinals

Back injury sends McNair to bench

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

The Titans will start Billy Volek at quarterback tomorrow against Arizona as Steve McNair continues to rest his stiff back.

It will be Volek's first start of the season after making eight starts in relief of McNair last season.

McNair has had back stiffness since late last week, but played in last Sunday's 31-23 loss to the Bengals. McNair hasn't practiced since then, however, and Volek worked with the first-team offense again yesterday.

Titans Coach Jeff Fisher confirmed McNair met with a specialist earlier this week about his back, and said the news was good.

"Actually I am very optimistic about it right now,'' Fisher said.

McNair left the locker room without speaking to reporters yesterday and did not speak to reporters all week.

Fisher said McNair's back has improved since the beginning of the week and didn't rule him out for tomorrow's game at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

"He has been in this situation before," Fisher said. "He is much better right now than he was last week.''

Volek said he's prepared to start if called upon and sounded like he's expecting it. Matt Mauck, the No. 3 quarterback, has never played in an NFL game.

"Billy has taken just about every practice snap this week and he is ready to play," Fisher said. "He has been in this situation before. I am not concerned about his ability to be productive.''

In relief of McNair last season, Volek went 218-of-357 for 2,486 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His primary target was wide receiver Drew Bennett, who is out after undergoing surgery on his dislocated thumb on Monday.

Rookie Brandon Jones is now the No. 1 wide receiver, leading a group that includes third-year pro Tyrone Calico and rookies Courtney Roby and Roydell Williams.

"I feel like my timing is great with the younger guys. We just have to execute and have fun,'' Volek said. "My guy is the guy that is open. These three young guys that we have, I am very confident in what they can do and very confident with what the offense can do.

"The way things have gone this week I think I am going to get the nod, though we are just going to have to wait and see.''

McNair attended practice yesterday but did not throw in any drills. He tossed a football on the side to teammates and trainers and on twice bent over to pick a football off the ground.

McNair is listed as questionable on the injury report, which also has him with an ankle injury.

"I am prepared to go 10 games and the playoffs, that is just me,'' Volek said. "That is what I want to do. But I don't make the decisions around here.

"Steve is struggling right now. He is banged up. He didn't think in Week 7 he would be in this condition and I know that is frustrating for him. I am just going to go out there and play my game and try and lead this team to a win

If he does start I am forever grateful, Spain. I've got brady on the bye and Volek is my only ther viable (didn't even think about picking up Harrington, lol) option. As much as I admire McNair's toughness I sure need Billy V to come out blazing. :D

Local sportscasters were all discussing this last night. There still is the slight possibility that McNair could play, but as the article states, Volek looks like the starter at this point. McNair has been fairly unimpressive this year. He certainly isnt playing like he did the year he shared the league MVP with Peyton Manning. I think Volek's playing could very well be a positive thing for the young wide outs on this team. Brandon Jones, Roydell Williams, and Courtney Roby have all shown the ability to play in this league. Volek will definitely attempt to get the ball to them downfield. He has a nice deep ball and throws down the field alot more than McNair. I am anxious to see how this plays out....

Lets be honest McNair hasn't been the same for a year and 6 games now. Personally while I think Volek is pretty good I don't think he is as good as some do. BUT I do think against bad D's, and Zona is a bad D, he can and will do well. I don't trust him against good D's yet. So this is the perfect game for him tomorrow. I think The Titans will score more with him in there than McNair in there. AND I think it will help Jones, who I think will have a nice game, like 80 and a TD nice. McNair to me is just too cautious I think. He doesn't go downfield much, and he drops off TONS of passes to his TE's. At the very least Volek will throw downfield to the WR's and that is what you should do against a Zona D that isn't good especially in the secondary.

1. McNair has hung on one season too long. I am convinced this will be his last season.

2. McNair may not be throwing downfield because he CAN'T throw downfield. The guy is the ultimate warrior, but he is, I think, more banged up than he cares to admit.

This news has me thinking this could be a special year for me.

I'm 6-0, but Bulger is my starter. My backups are Leftwich (off this week) & Volek.

The only guys in my league available were Martin, Simms & Holcomb that could help me this week. Right before I was getting ready to cut Volek (who I was hoping to stash away for next year), I heard he was going to be the starter.

"The Whale"! Sweet. That has to be one of the all-time best logos around. That and the old Montreal Expos, the old Milwaukee Brewers.

Too bad Bennett wont' play. The combo of Volek/Bennett single handedly propeled me through the playoffs last year.

My thoughts exactly. Go figure. You can't win with D. Bennett this year. I drafted him hoping the McNair would do his normal thing (get injured),

Volek is definitely the starter against the Cards. McNair did NOT even make the trip to Arizona. If I was an McNair owner, that would scare me ALOT. McNair plays with any sort of injury. Anybody think a stiff back would keep McNair out? I think it is something more serious, although I have heard NOTHING to confirm my suspicions...

It sort of depends on whether the Titans secondary can slow down the Arizona offense. If Pacman Jones and Andre Woolfolk can actually cover Fitzgerald and Bolden, then Fisher will rely more on the running game. If AZ starts scoring alot, then Volek will be forced to throw to keep up in a shootout. I actually think this game will go over the total with a 30-27 sort of final. Volek will get oh, maybe 250 yards and 2 scores. Volek throws a great deep ball. If these young wideouts can get open, he can get them the ball. I also think Chris Brown will have a good day. Should be an interesting game with the potential for lots of fantasy points.
