What Thompson did last year almost got him killed. The O line last season was wishful thinking. With all the cuts now they may be able to get some decent players. It seems kind of like a catch 22 at this point though, as how the pack assembles their team may depend on who the qb's going to be.

Doc Holliday
I wonder how the CBA stuff is going to affect his decision 1348167[/snapback] This makes a lot of sense. Favre has been in the league and has been a big enough star to know exactly whats going on in these meetings. he may be waiting to see what happens. Todd1
I don't blame him at all. Defense wins championships and I hope he's telling Thompson to put a better D on the field! 1 better OG would help a ton too.
piratesownninjas
I'd like to see him come back for one year, but thats because I've been following him at a near stalker level for the past 12 or so years... If I was him, I'd leave though...
CarryTheRock
Favre is killing the Packers without making a decision. This team is going into free agency and the draft blind if he doesn't let them know what his intentions are. McCarthy is keep a smile on his face but it has to be eating him alive. The 31-year-old Smith started all 16 games at middle linebacker last year and led the team in tackles for the fifth consecutive year. In his nine seasons in the NFL he has had at least 100 tackles every year and set a 49ers record with 189 in 2003. Smith, who began his career with Washington, earned a base salary of $2.5 million last year and will probably command a similar salary in free agency. The Packers are looking to upgrade at both outside linebacker positions, but might be willing to move middle linebacker Nick Barnett outside. Smith is the kind of tough player new coach Mike McCarthy favors. McCarthy was offensive coordinator with the 49ers last year and got a look at Smith close up. Randall
By Pete Dougherty PackersNews.com If the NFL doesn’t extend its collective-bargaining agreement this week, and today becomes a “bloody Thursday” of unanticipated roster purges, the Green Bay Packers stand to benefit as much as any team in the league. For the long term, the Packers rely on the NFL’s extensive revenue-sharing and salary-cap system as much as anyone, and the organization’s future could be in jeopardy if there’s no CBA extension a year from now. But this year, the Packers rank fourth in the NFL in salary-cap room for 2006, about $22 million under the projected cap of $95 million. That would allow them the financial wherewithal to sign players who get released because teams have to purge their rosters to get under the unexpectedly low cap. As of Wednesday morning, as many as 13 teams were over the projected cap, including six that were at least $12 million over: Oakland ($23 million), Miami (18.9 million), Kansas City ($17.7 million), Tennessee ($15.7 million), Washington ($14 million) and Denver ($13.4 million).
