I want a tattoo....

Ok so any advice is appreciated. First off let me say why I would like to get a tattoo: I am starting to get somewhat religious and respect my religion very much so. Also, my dad died almost eight years ago, when I was eleven. I would like to get a tattoo of the symbol in my avatar and underneath it maybe have his initials or maybe the date he passed away or something.

Now I have a couple of questions. These are probably some stupid questions in some people's eyes but I am going to get ask them regardless because A. I am a young guy and B. I like to pick and research things before I do them.

1. What is I guess "the recovery time" for getting a tattoo if any? Can I not do certain things for a while and how long does it take for it to be OK and all to touch and stuff?

2. Has anyone ever had any trouble getting a job because of a tattoo? I feel as though if I was to get a religious tattoo that it would somewhat justify it but maybe I am wrong. Obviously placement of the tattoo matters. I'm sort of talking in the corporate world I guess. I am thinking about becoming a teacher but who knows what will change.

Which gets me to my next question....

3. For a tattoo like this, where do you think is a nice/cool place to get it? Right now, I am sort of leaning towards the inside of my left ankle. I think that looks kind of cool and will be somewhat hidden. My mom doesn't like that idea as much because it is close to the feet and putting a religious symbol close to one's feet in the Hindu religion doesn't bode well. I was also thinking maybe the top of my back but then thought I would sort of like to see it as well. Also, some people brought up on my chest over my heart would be significant.

I originally wanted it on the top of my hand. This brings up the question again of how good that looks in the professional world. If I was to get in on top of my hand, I think I would get it somewhat smaller than I would get somewhere else.

Any advice/expertise is appreciated, thanks again to all and Happy Fourth.

I appologize. I went back and read the whole thing.

I'd like that TAT on the upper middle back if it were me. I had a friend in basic training get the US flag on the upper middle of his back and I thought it was tough.

i agree with pud on the top of hand thing. that could be a negative in the corporate world.

nothing wrong with the traditional upper arm. easy for you to see, covered in the office, away from the feet. don't know if there is any additional health risk putting one close to the heart - i would definitely research that point.

When I was 19 I got a tattoo and was concerned about the locationof it for job as well. I got mine on my left calf. I figured it is covered when at work but it is also in a location that I could see it.

I have 7..

"Recovery" time is minimal. You keep it moist for a while with A and D ointment and your tattoo will do fine. You will barely be sore after a day. You may want to wait until the end of the summer because sunburn on it and chlorine are 2 big no nos. Nsabs wife is a Tattoo artist so im sure he can elaborate even better..I would get it on my arm . Either side bicept or shoulder. Im not big on leg tattoos but thats just me. The Tattoo itself doesnt hurt much at all. The area goes numb pretty quick . The outline hurts a little more then when they do the coloring but its nothing to worry about. I like the idea of honoring your Dad but be smart where you place it..Arm, shoulder, chest, back should keep you safe if you are worried about it showing when you go for a job. Good luck.

My advice, corny as it may be is this...

You do not need a symbol to honor your Dad. Every day that you hold yourself to his standards in a way that would make him proud honors him beyond anything you could ever do to your body.

I just came back from visiting my father, he turned 63 yesterday...I am grateful to have the chance to still know him and have him get to know my four kids.

Be proud to be your fathers son, and hold your head up and go make him proud. It sounds like you are on the right track.

Finally, what do you think your father would say...

Good luck

Don't do it.

At best, your professional types are going to be ambivalent about it. Many will have a negative reaction to it.

I am a professional (lawyer). I have never seen a male lawyer with an exposed tattoo. I would not employ at my firm anyone sporting an exposed tattoo. I would expect this to be more of a rule than an exception in my industry.

I'm pretty sure that many of those who hire teachers would have a negative reaction to a tattoo.

If he were to get a tattoo in a location that would be covered by professional attire this shouldn't be a problem. He would know it is there but his co-workers/employer wouldn't have any knowledge of the tattoo.

That would seem to be the case.

I appreciate all the advice so far. I have been going back and forth on the idea of getting a tattoo for some time. I guess the consensus is that the tattoo on the top of the hand is a bad idea. And if I was to get one, I would definitely get it at the end of the summer, right before I leave for school.

I appreciate the kind posts about not getting a tattoo because it is not necessary to pay tribute in that way. I have thought about that as well. Question to those who think that: are you guys just against tattoos or think it would really hurt me in the future if it comes to a job possibly, even it is is covered or something? I am not pro tattoos or anything, I'm just looking to see both sides of the argument. Thanks again.

I am not against tattoos per se. They just aren't my bag, but I don't begrudge anyone who has one (ChuckB has one and I tolerate him). My advice was against visible tattoos, especially if you are going the 'professional' career route.

A covered Tattoo is a non issue as far as being detrimental to you getting a job. If you do get one that is visable I guess it depends on where..Hand is a bad idea..Tats on the hand or face/ neck might hurt you depending on the field you go into. If you are that concerned about that possibility when getting a tattoo then be safe and get it in a spot you can cover it..As far as the honoring your Dad aspect of it I think its a great thing but I also agree with the posts that say that how you handle yourself will honor him infinately more then a tattoo. That being said I personally like putting those that are close to me in ink. I have my wifes name and 2 daughters names on me. I do regret the TimC Forever Tattoo that I got but I was so drunk..

I feel like I have done tons to live up to my dad; I am a good kid and I definitely handle myself great so that isn't a question. It's not like I'm trying to justify my respect towards my dad with a tattoo; I don't need that. I always was somewhat against tattoos but only recently thought it would be nice to get something like that to have on myself. I mean it is something I truthfully think about everyday and I think it would just be another thing to represent a part of my life. Something small, nothing I need to flaunt.

It obviously looks like if I was to get one I would have to be able to cover it up....

whomper, if you don't mind me asking, are all of yours visible? And have you ever had any bad reactions or anything of that sort? I don't think I would care what others think for the most part but I am just wondering.

I just pictured this in my head and I think it actually looks pretty cool. Am I right in saying you're talking about below where your neck meets your back?

I wear a long sleeve dress shirt everyday for work so none are visable. In the past few years our company finally went casual friday so in the summer ive worn short sleeve shirts and the one I have on my forearm is visable. Its on the inside of my forearm. No one makes a big deal out of it when they see it. But im in the fashion industry. Our industry is less strict when it comes to that sort of thing. I deal with designers that wear some wacky clothes and have really eccentric looks. Monday-Thursday im long sleeve with a tie Friday short sleeves once in a while and no one really cares. As far as a bad reaction im not sure what you mean..Bad reaction as in infection or irritation ..No. Any good Tattoo parlor will give you instructions when you leave and if you follow them you should be fine. Bad reaction as in someone in the business world seeing it and it having a bad effect on me..No for reasons stated above but as Furd pointed out it depends on the industry you are in..Again I like the Dad symbol idea because its important that you get something you wont regret..When I was 18 I got a girl on my arm. It was no girl that I knew I just thought I would like a cool looking girl on my arm..That one I regret. The tattoo itself was done great but when people ask me who it is and I say its noone I feel like a tool.It doesnt look like my wife so I cant play that angle. I also have one on my hip that is so bad its famous among my friends.I explain it in the other tattoo thread that was bumped. Its a black rose on fire. It looks like and was nicknamed "The burning cabbage" But all the Tattoos I have of my family members are my favorites and I wouldnt change them at all.

Thanks again for the advice. Yeah, I meant reaction by people but wasn't limiting it to the business world. Maybe other instances?

Well non business world mine are very visable. Both shoulders, both bicepts, Forearm and chest..Chest one isnt really visable but in the summer the others are clear as day. Its just a look I am comfortable with which is what really matters. I was in bands for many years and that is the crowd I hung out with. You need to be very sure you are going to want this on your body for the rest of your life. Im sure when certain people see it they dont like it but Im ok with that. I have a lot though. I will be looked at differently then a person that just has one. I wouldnt worry about that if I were you as long as you make the decision that you are sure you want to do it. Im pretty much done but I think I might get one more down in Atlantic city from Nsabs wife when I meet him at some point this summer. I keep harping on really being sure of the tattoo you are going to get because if you get one you dont like you obviously will regret it.

dude, here's my take for what it's worth- my brother- NSab on these boards as most know has a boat load of tattoos all over- arms, legs, chest, whatever-

he is 12 years older than me and I always thought he was crazy for getting all inked up,etc. I guess you could calssify me as a "preppy/jock" sort in high school while he was the "biker" dude- I never understood or appreciated the meaning or significance of a tattoo when I was younger but was never really opposed to it, just wasn't for me you follow?

As I got older there were always the jokes from NSab and the rest of my family (my sister, Dad, and even Mom have ink) about when I would get a tattoo and I always said I'd never get one just to get one, until it had real meaning to me- like when I had kids for example,

So long story short I got my first one two summers ago- a rose, heart with my 2 daughters names and my wife's name on my upper arm, and NSab's wife hit me up with my second (which is still unfinished :D ) on my other arm for my 3rd daughter.

I did this because I wanted to express my appreciatation for the family that I now had- I wanted everyone to know that I was proud to wear those names on myself- a living tribute if you will which is what it sounds like you are after.

So go for it my man, paying tribute to your Dad is admirable and cool IMO, getting a stupid sunshine or something on your ankle when you are drunk is just stupid. Unfortunatley you should think about public perception and get it in a place that you can cover up- a hand is not a great idea. Right or wrong perception is reality and the general corporate public world isn't going look favorably on a neck/hand tattoo.

Also, it doesn't hurt all that bad- it's not excatly enjoyable, but nothing you can't deal with- and there is no "recovery time" issue at all- you put some ointment on it- cover it up for a few days and go about your business.

Good luck my man and let us know how it turns out.....
