I just got a letter from my landlord saying that if I don't pay them the $810 that I owe them within the next 7 days that they are going to evict me.

The thing is--I don't owe them anything. All of my rent is (and always has been) paid in full and paid on time.

I just called the office but they are closed. The letter says I should contact my lawyer.

Anybody have a tent we can borrow?

Wiegie,

I have 2 rooms for rent. Cheap, but ya gotta put up with Nilly as a bed partner. :D

Sounds like BS. Form letter 'cause some underpaid NON-UNION employee checked the wrong box.

Chi to GR isn't a bad commute, especially if you sleep like Sky! :D

It's a bit of a pain, but round up all of your cancelled rent checks or other form of payment and send them with a letter from a lawyer's office.

Chances are the landlord has a chance to rent your place for more than you are locked in for and is trying to get you to vacate the premesis. :D

This is pretty much what I am thinking (we live in a big apartment complex that is owned by some sort of property management company that owns many other such complexes).

As for living in Chicago--thanks for the offer, but since I don't sleep like sky (or should that be: I don't sleep like sky doesn't sleep) I think it wouldn't work. :D

I have 315 beautiful acres in Virginia...Hardrocker, Mrs. Hardrocker and the 4 little hardrockers would gladly find some space for the Wiegie family...

Sounds like something fishy is going on for sure. Before we bought our house our landlady tried to raise our rent and increase our deposit with exactly 30 days notice. Since we were on a month to month lease she was within her rights to do so even though we had been there for 6 years. Do you have a cancelled check or receipt?

Its probably an error that can be fixed by going to the rental office with your canceled check record. Make them apologize all over themselves, then storm out saying you will sue them.

P.S. Just in case, I have a large tent and camping equipment you can use. You will have to come to VA to get it though.

My online banking records show that my account has paid out the amount of my rent going back to the beginning of the year. (It doesn't show that I paid them to my landlord, but my rent payment isn't a standard payment that I would make to anyone else, so I am confident that all of them went to pay for my rent.) I also renewed my lease back in April for another year and they sure didn't say anything about me owing them any money then.

(The real funny thing is that I can't figure out where in the world they got $810 from--because that is not what my monthly rent is.)

Long ago I had some landlord pull some BS on me like that and I found out where she was and walked right into the middle of her business meeting and stopped everything until she agreed to drop all of her bogus charges. She quickly agreed and none of the men in the room ever got out of their chairs or had anything to say about it. I looked like Charles Manson at the time. Maybe it helped. :D

Thanks. If needed, I will come by and pick it up and then go find some nice area to camp out in on Hardrocker's property.

Edit to add: But don't worry, BJ, we will still come vacation in Atlanta. :D

The one year I rented before I bought my house, I had to take my landlord to court. The Michigan landlord-tenant relations act is very fair and outlines everything that a landlord has to do to either evict you or take your security deposit. Send him a registered letter stating your position that you don't owe him any money (having a copy certified as a copy by a notary public wouldn't hurt). From now on, you should only communicate with your landlord via certified letter.

And don't worry about getting kicked out. Contested evictions take forever, and your landlord has to prove you didn't pay the rent.

Good advice. I would take this seriously, even though it's probably a foulup.

Wiegie, I have a 10x12 office with a futon in it that I would gladly let your family stay in for as long as you need to. We also have a swing, an exersaucer, and a bouncy chair for your babying needs. There is a hose outside you can use to wash off, and drink from.

In the spirit of hospitality and the Huddle community, by a happy coincidence it's only last week that I cleaned out the garage and swept the floor. On one of the shelves there's an inflatable bed, so feel free to drop by. :D

Yeah I talked to the wife. We have to take down the leather harness, the automatic butt polisher, the twin compressed air dildo wigglers, move the gimp to our bedroom, chain up the 14 baboons; find a place for our Vaseline hot tub, spackle over the teeth embedded in our walls, remove the 66 inches of parachute cord from the Norwegian nut tickler, fire the bisexual stewardess who makes a mean beef stew, sweep up all of the hair and finally put a fresh coat of paint on our dungeon room but you are more than welcome to come stay here for free. Just….you know, don’t worry about those camera looking things.

thanks--I'm not really too worried since I am certain it is a screw-up in the office somehow, but this is still nice to know

(and also thanks to all of those people offering me garages and hoses and stuff like that :D

Ditto on the certified letter. I'd write it, something to the extent of "in reference to your demand of $810 dated xx/xx/xx" asking the WT-F is the $810 for, and indicating you have proof of all rent and etc. paid. I'd also mention the lease renewal in April and that no mention was made then. Before mailing, make a copy and walk that into them and get the lowdown.

Did you talk today? Let us know how goes it.

You're always welcome to move out here if you don't mind the lousy weather, gross beaches, ugly bikini-clad women, and the scary earthquakes. :D

Send them a certified letter noting that you've paid all of your rent and that if they insist on pursuing this piece of greenmail (i.e., fraud) that you're going to bill them $200 / hr, plus legal fees, for wasting your time.

+1

Then hope that he evicts you and you can in turn sue him.
