Caveman_Nick
I do a bit of fishing each year in lakes in MA and ME, including a 10 day trip up to northern ME. Usually we fish from canoes on mountain lakes, but I have been thinking about moving to a kayak. This is the front runner. Does anyone have any experience with this? It seems like a versatile yak, and would do a nice job both in salt and fresh water if I wanted to fish for stripers instead of smallmouth. FYI, I am really not interested in the Hobie Miragedrive set-up. I don't think it would work well in the rocky lakes where I would be fishing. SeductiveNun
Lousy timing. I work with a guy who fishes out of a kayak a lot, but he left this morning for a job site in Indiana and won't be back until next week. I myself have never tried it. I have a Loon 120 kayak with a sit-in cockpit, and try as I might to figure out how I could fish out of that thing I still can't imagine trying to land a fish of any size while sitting in that. That being said, the model you are looking at would make perfect sense, as those sit on top kayaks seem to be a lot less tippy when you shift your weight. Plus those ocean kayaks can take a mean head-on hit from a speeding 50-foot motorboat (just make sure you dive off first). If you can wait a week, I'll ask him when he gets back. I am not planning on buying something immediately...I am just starting to investigate. I wrote to Hobie regarding the Mirage drive and how well it handles beach landings on rocky beaches. No word yet, though I doubt I will hear back... It's too bad, because the Mirage Adventure is the yak I truly covet.

When I'm out paddling around the lake in late summer, I skim through the reeds and you'd be amazed at how many ducks I sneak up on in there. Granted with the weeds high, they can't see me and I really can't see them, but man, nothing gets the heart pumping like a dozen mallards taking off 3 feet from you when you were previously in near total silence. :nervoustwitch: the image of someone with a heavy recoil weapon firing it at right angles to the kayak is cracking me up... I'm seeing a Looney Tunes moment there.

Jimmy Neutron
good call, they are a little tippy. This is what I was thinking. I've been in a kayak once and I had a heck of a time staying upright. I can't imagine doing a lot of casting, or fighting good fish out of one. Splash!

I can't imagine doing a lot of casting, or fighting good fish out of one. Splash! Depends. I was in an ocean kayak where you sit on top, and it was quite stable. I own a smaller kayak where you sit inside a cockpit, and those I would not want to fish out of, since a decent largemouth, northern, or walleye would end up fishing for me. SeductiveNun
CN, I talked with my co-worker, and he fishes out of a regular kayak that he made himself. Standard 14 footer, nothing fancy, and has caught some decent size fish while using it (up to 5 pounds). I still think if you hooked into a monster pike or walleye you'd be wrasslin with them in the drink. I also asked him if there were any specific fishing kayaks he would recommend, and the first one he mentioned was the one by Hobey. FWIW, I took mine out last week and tried fishing out of it. Caught a few smaller fish, but nothing that I wasn't able to land with any difficulty.

Hobie is about to announce 2 new products at this show, and it's probable that other MFRs will be introducing lines for next year as well. I'll keep you posted
