cliaz
well scrub the area in bleach unless it's carpet. Just steam the carpet and Believe it or not but Febreeze works wonderful.
Rebellab
Have the people coming to look at your house rub a little vics vapor rub under their noses they won't notice a thing. Seriously frebreeze will get you by, or anything that actually kills bacteria. It would also be helpful to know the type of surface. If it is any open space and the critter has been removed, it should clear itself out by the weekend. Clean thoroughly and disinfect.

Savage Beatings
I would assume that Ozone would work for dead squirrel just as well as it works for heavy smoke smell after a fire. You can rent a little plug in box that produces ozone, and let it run for a day while you're at work. You don't want to stay inside while it's running... in high doses it can be toxic. dmarc117
the amazing thing is how bad it smelled and it had just died.....didnt smell anything all day then around 4pmish started to smell something...the little bugger was still pliable so riggy hadnt set in yet either. thank god he didnt expire when we were away for a few days!! Footballjoe
What will also help the entire house smell good and give a nice homey feel is to bake apples with heavy amounts of cinnamon covering them.
Savage Beatings
One more note... if you do decide to use ozone, keep in mind that ozone is heavy, so place the box up high in the room and let it settle down as it comes out.

Down Goes Frazia
just an FYI..... the smell of a dead rodent in your house is hell & gone from the real smell of death...... a morgue. I worked in one for 18 months back in the 80's - Jackson Memorial hospital - miami, fl. there's nothing like it.

If you don't know how it found your basement, I hope you searched your house to make sure that the squirrels aren't nesting somewhere in your house. We had them in the attic of our office building and they chewed through cables and wires. It was pretty funny to be sitting at your desk and hear them scurrying across the panels, stop and look at you through a gap and then scurry on!
