Accusing others of asserting intellectual superiority while you wield "moral superiority" like a club...nice.

As far as prereqs - call me silly, but I think two adults who are willing to stand up in front of friends, family, and whatever supernatural entities may or may not exist and declare "we're in this together until death" pretty much covers the whole ball of wax.

Personally, I know quite a few same-sex couples who are as solid and committed as any breeders; maybe moreso than most. I have a hard time denying them the opportunity (and benefits) granted opposite-sex couples because the physiology doesn't quite match the norm.

i'm not wielding any superiority, believe me. i respect your beliefs and was sharing mine.

It's a shame, because your bigotry regarding this is saying "seperate but equal is fine" when in fact you're suggesting nothing that is equal. Two people either get married and have the same benefits as any other two people or they don't. Your splitting hairs is disingenuous at best, and you couldn't even answer the question without going elsewhere to find something to say for you what you yourself cannot.

Me, I believe in equal rights, and that's squarley what this is about. Civilization is going to be destroyed NEVER by allowing 2 men or women lives as a married couple with all benefits given a man/woman couple such as shared benefits ot the simple ability for a spouse to automatically inheirit their partner's assets should an untimely death occur, which currently isn't allowed. just as a single albeit very important example.

Marriage should be a religious institution only and not a legal one. Stop with the commingling of church and state. Let each religious denomination decide if they want to recognize gay marriage. Stop legislating "morality" and leave consenting adults alone.

marriage is not meant for just anyone to have. that has been my point all along. it means much more than a set of legal and tax benefits. it means much more to us as a people. you don't see that. the laws and arrangements we have stem from why we believe the marriage between a man and a woman is fundamental to our society. marriage came first, benefits followed. if you don't meet the prereqs, you don't play, sorry.

i'm not going to go into the spiritual meaning and importance of marriage, we've been down that road. you apparently don't adhere to any spiritual beliefs, so it is not of importance to you anyway. it is for these reasons, however, that it started and became a supported institution in the first place.

call me another name now and assert your intellectual superiority ... we can agree to disagree.

Commenting on my spirituality now? Interesting how you equate sexual ethics and behavior with spirituality. Im picking up a theme with you.

And not that it really matters, but I attend services almost every Sunday, dipAthena, and we established previously that you dont even understand the basic premise of the message of Jesus, what with yer exclusionary set up meant to keep you and yer kind alone in God's special place. Dont pull yer self righteous high and mighty religiosity bs on me cause you have a personal problem with the feygs. What happened, get a boner at church camp playing with little Billy Whitebread?

And that crapola about marriage "between a man and a woman" being fundamental to our society is just crapola and yer opinion. 37 years ago it was fundamental to our society that marriage only be between a white man and a white woman or a black man and a black woman. Sorry you dont understand the Beatitudes or the Constitution. Must be tough for such a devoted "Christian".

from that document: "During fiscal year 2005, more than 600,000 new Americans were sworn-in

as U.S. citizens in ceremonies around the nation."

i'm no expert here, i'm just saying that people are finding ways to do it.

Yes, some people can do it--but 600,000 is nowhere near the number of people around the world who, if given the chance, would pretty much drop everything to be able to become an American citizen. A very conservative estimate of the number of such people would probably be 1.2 billion--meaning that only 1 out of every 2000 people who would hope to become a citizen actually became one. The simple fact is that living in America/becoming a citizen is not something that is available to most people just as long as they go through some routine process.

Agree 100%. The State should simply get out of the marriage business and treat each individual as an individual. Get rid of all tax breaks and tax penalites that are related to marital status. If a church will allow a couple to have a ceremony that results in them being called married, then yeehaw, go for it!

If the State insists on recognizing marriages, then it has to do so equally. I'm not even a proponent of gay marriage at all, but this is just the way that I see it.

i think we have always been in agreement on this, no?

36"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the great and first commandment. 39And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."
