Pope Flick
http://www.webbforsenate.com/press/release.php?id=66 He wants our border problem to be addressed by preventing our grandparents from getting medicine they cannot afford. What a grand idea.

Perchoutofwater
You think the FDA guards our borders? No, but it makes sure that the drugs sold in the US are safe. If we are going to get them from across the border, then we can get rid of it. It is one of the main reasons that drugs are so expensive anyway. 'Drugs from Canada" = Generics of more expensive drugs not on sale here. Nice try.

You mean drugs that didn't have to go through the FDA trials? What should the governments stance be if a person on medicare get drugs from Mexico and the drugs cause a reaction and they have to be hospitalized? Should the government foot the bill? Perchoutofwater
Aren't they getting the same drugs, just at a cheaper price? Yes, I believe that is the case in most instances. I wonder if Canada has something like the FDA that makes drug manufacturers go through expensive trials.
H8tank
Aren't they getting the same drugs, just at a cheaper price? The reason is price controls, they do not have a free economy, hence, kanadians come to the US for healthcare.

tonorator
it is illegal to import drugs into the U.S. which were originally manufactured in the U.S., which is the case for the majority of drugs coming in from canada. spam companies are forced to sell developed countries drugs on the cheap due to price controls, and then these companies re-sell them to folks in the states, which is illegal. while i agree that prescription drugs are too expensive to start with, there are some good reasons as to why. the costs of developing an FDA approved drug are massive. spam companies would not invest these kinds of $$$ unless they knew they could turn a profit. if we continue to undercut them with this export/re-import game, it hurts the entire industry as the company's ability to develop the next blockbuster drug is hindered. so it is not just a simple case of "look at the bad guy keeping drugs from seniors!" there is much more to it than that. i'm not familiar with allen, but this sounds like he is putting in measures to stop an illegal activity from happening. today, we are just looking the other way. this is a symptom of a bigger problem ... Perchoutofwater
So you prefer an unregulated pharmaceutical industry? Absolutely not, i'm also not in favore of getting illegal drugs from Canada or Mexico. If we are going to do that, the let's just get rid of the FDA it will make the drugs here cheaper. Right now we are supporting other countries with our drug reasearch and accredidations.

Not every drug company is American, just like not every University research program is being propped up in the name of advancing science.
