Otis
Somewhere along the line I got into the practice of just answering the phone (to outside calls, I am not talking about answering inside calls when you know it's your colleague down the hall) by simply saying my full name. For some reason it doesn't sound very friendly, or comes off awkward, or something. I'm wondering whether I should change it up. Here are some options I have been considering: "Robert Smith" (What I say now (note, this is not actually my name)). "Hello, this is Robert Smith" "Hi, Bob Smith" "Hi, this is Bob" What do others do? Otis
"restaurant name", this is bier meister. how can i help you? This is the service industry, which I believe is different. For example, I could see my secretary answering the phone this way. I don't think lawyers do it though.

Big John
It goes to the receptionist first or to a direct line to me (usually a coworker), so the caller knows it is going to me, so I just say "hello". AtomicCEO
I answer my business phone with "Bob Smith". I'm amazed at how many people answer with, "Yes... I'm looking for Bob?" Sigh. "Yes... Bob F'ing Smith, moron. Can I help you?" If I'm feeling sarcastic, I answer with "Smith Communications, home of the world reknowned low prices and excellent customer service... this is Bob speaking, how may I direct your call?"
