While this doesn't fly at work, I prefer favorite way to answer the phone was taught to me by Danny DeVito in the movie "Ruthless People" if it's a wrong number:

Danny DeVito: "Hello?"

Caller: "Is Debbie there?"

Danny Devito: "Debbie can't come to the phone right now, because my d*ck is in her mouth."

Caller: Hangs up.

Classic scene.

How do you define "professional?"

I think there is a commonly accepted definition. I don't mean as in "professional golfer" or as in the oldest profession known to man, I mean the common "professionals" -- doctor, lawyer, etc.

To the best of my knowledge, the old school definition is very narrow (doctor, lawyer, clergyman).

All of my calls are screened. If I know the caller, I say whatever I want to. If I don't, I say "Hello."

How do you define "professional?"

This is a good question, so I researched further:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profession

A profession is an occupation that requires extensive training and the study and mastery of specialized knowledge, and usually has a professional association, ethical code and process of certification or licensing. Examples are accounting, law, nursing, medicine, finance, the military, the clergy and engineering.

Classically, there were only three professions: ministry, medicine, and law. These three professions each hold to a specific code of ethics, and members are almost universally required to swear some form of oath to uphold those ethics, therefore "professing" to a higher standard of accountability. Each of these professions also provides and requires extensive training in the meaning, value, and importance of its particular oath in the practice of that profession.
