Sam
We're 24 weeks into the pregnancy and just found out she has gestational diabetes. Niether one of us know too much about it. She has to go to a class next Thursday. Just from what I've been reading on-line it can be controlled through diet and excercise. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks

Thanks My dad is diabetic due to the meds he takes for his heart transplant. He has to check his blood sugar, and adjust what and how much and when he eats. To be honest,I don't know if this would apply to the type of diabetes your wife has. My thoughts will be to the health of both your wife and child. dmarc117
yep...my wife had it as well....she controlled it thru diet, saw a dietician. pretty simple. the only thing is they say if u get the gest. diabetes, u run a greater risk of getting adult onset diab. in the future. also have to watch sugar levels of the baby as well. I probably should have explained what gestational diabetes is. Link What is gestational diabetes? Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women - about 135,000 cases of gestational diabetes in the United States each year. We don't know what causes gestational diabetes, but we have some clues. The placenta supports the baby as it grows. Hormones from the placenta help the baby develop. But these hormones also block the action of the mother's insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother's body to use insulin. She may need up to three times as much insulin. Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, glucose cannot leave the blood and be changed to energy. Glucose builds up in the blood to high levels. This is called hyperglycemia. Fatman
My bosses' wife had it during here first two pregnancies and again now in her third. From what he's told me it's more of an inconvenience. It certainly can lead to complications if not moderated properly, but her biggest issue has been dealing with sugar cravings since she's already had to give up a lot (like booze). ChuckB
My girlfriend had it and she had to watch her diet and go to the doctor every week to drink the sugar drink and have them test her levels. She is very small (under 100lbs) but she gained a lot of weight during her pregnancy and I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it Good luck with this Sam, I don't think it's something to over worry about just keep it in check. spain
My wife didnt get it with our oldest child, but she got it with our 2nd kid. She just had to watch her diet. everything turned out well!
johnsonk2
Similar to others with experience, my wife had it with our first child (he's now 5). She controlled it with diet and check bloodwork I think it was every 2 weeks. As I remember the biggest risk you face during the pregnancy is the baby gaining too much weight too fast, which is why they controlled her diet so strictly. Worst part about it was She complained of being hungry the last 5 months of pregnancy. Good luck...should be no problem!

Perchoutofwater
As long as she monitors it and controls her isnulin she will be fine, and will not have any long term effects. One of my friends mother's had it with him, and they did not catch it, and if they do not catch it and control it, it can become permanent. She now is blind in one eye and losing sight in another, and has an insulin pump inplanted. She would have been fine had the doctor caught it, and treated it while she was pregnant. Brewer
Mrs. Brewer had it with our first, but not our second and not currently with the third. She controlled it through diet and excercise. Didn't really have any complications from it. Good luck and make sure that if you have a question, that you ask your doctor. They hear it all and nothing is too stupid to ask. AtomicCEO
My sister found out a few weeks ago that she has gestational diabetes. (are you my brother-in-law? ) Hers got bad pretty quick, and she has to give herself insulin shot in the belly, and eat 6 meals a day to maintain her blood-sugar. It's an inconveninece, but with modern medicine, it shouldn't be overly dangerous to her or the kid.
Sam
Thanks everyone. I feel a bit more at ease now that some of you have had experiences with it and everything turned out fine. I appreciate all the well wishes.

Clubfoothead
Well $hit. I didn't know anything about it. Glad this appears to be relatively minor if one keeps an eye on it. Good luck with the baby.
wiegie
my sister and one of my coworkers had it--they both did fine in their pregnancies (although both of them expressed relief to me when they learned that my wife did not have it--so take that for what it is worth) good luck to you and the mrs (and to the baby)

Big John
Sam..I dont have much to add except my best wishes to your family . Same here. My mother had long-term diabetes, so I have some experience with that, so your wife's condition is not as bad.
