We're 24 weeks into the pregnancy and just found out she has gestational diabetes. Niether one of us know too much about it. She has to go to a class next Thursday. Just from what I've been reading on-line it can be controlled through diet and excercise. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

Yep, wife had it for our 2nd. Easily controlled through diet and excersize. Honestly, it made me look at foods a whole lot different when you are counting carbs and sugars instead of fat and calories.

Don't worry about it. and more importantly, eat with her so you are not chowing on bread and peanut butter when she cannot.

Hang in there Sam. I wish you, Mrs Sam and little Sam all the best. Some people I work with have had gestational diabetes and everything worked out fine for them and it will for your family as well.

On a side note, I know your going to hook up the little one with plenty of Steelers gear. :D

If you need anything feel free to shoot me a PM.

Sorry I missed this thread earlier. :D

The good thing is they caught this problem now. Undiagnosed gestational diabetes (GDM) is a hugh problem. About 10% of all pregnant patients have diabetes. In the vast majority of cases a perinatologist (a specialist in complications of pregnancy) will be the doctor involved.

The outcome of your wife's pregnancy is largely dependent on how well she does the following:

1) The cornerstone of therapy is DIET. Your wife has a good chance of having a completely normal pregnancy IF she adheres to the diet they give her. I can't emphasize this enough. If the diet fails to control her blood sugars, she may have to be put on insulin or Glyburide (a pill).

2) Along with the diet comes discipline in doing fingerstick blood sugars every morning and after every meal and keeping an accurate and thorough log of all the values. She'll need to bring it to every prenatal visit.

3) Because babies of GDM patients can be large, she will have at least 2-3 sonograms as the pregnancy goes along, including one near the end of her pregnancy. She needs to keep all those appointments. If the baby is really large, her obstetrician may advise a c-section to avoid injury to the baby from labor and baginal delivery.

4) Your wife will be scheduled for non-stress tests (monitorings of the baby's heartbeat) at least weekly in the last 1-2 months of her pregnancy. Usually a bedside sonogram is performed also at each visit to measure the amount of amniotic fluid. It is very important not to miss any of these tests.

5) Most experts recommend an induction of labor before the due date in patients with normal-sized babies.

You can see from the above that there are ALOT of appointments involved with all this, but if you work closely with your doctor, your wife and baby should do just fine! :D

I hope this helps. :D

As always, if you have any future questions, don't hesitate to PM me.
