MojoMan
Personally, I think the hyphenated last name is a weak compromise. Call me a sexist bastage but I think the woman should take the husband's name unless she has developed a professional reputation under her maiden name (such as a lawyer or physician who has established herself). In that instance, she should just use her own name not hyphenate to Girl's Name Hubby-Barrister. JMO.

My wife considered doing something where her maiden name was kept on as a second middle name, but never considered a hyphenation. Besides, not taking it would confuse the kids, so unless your an NBA player with a slew of baby mommas and kids with 7 different last names, she should take on the last name... it makes for a cohesive family unit. Stay at home mom...with two kids who have dads last name. We have had a few words over this. Libs!
AtomicCEO
Libs won't agree though. Libs! Liberals eat their children and cause plagues too. No need to start basing your opinions in reality now, is there? Why don't you wait for one liberal (and... probably one that isn't a woman, just for fairness) to actually express the opinion you attribute to them? I think women should take the man's last name. Even in that professional, established name thing... I'm not sure you need it. I've seen the news anchors change their last name, and I roll with it. If anything, the name change gives them a little bit of publicity.

montster
You are right on, no doubt about it. Libs won't agree though. Libs! yes! we need to get rid of libs like lisa murkowski (r-alaska)! who cares if her father was well-known? her husband, verne martell, must be a real Rosie O'Donnell! and what about olympia snowe (r-maine)? grow a pair, john r. mckernan jr! (or should we call you "mr. snowe"?) and don't get me started on the late margaret chase smith. she might as well be named hillary rodham clinton for all i care! as long as she's a good wife, good mom and good companion, i couldn't care less what my wife calls herself. Clubfoothead
It strikes me as silly but to each their own. I told my wife either change it or stick with her maiden name. She agreed with that.

I kept thinking, "You're a Receptionist." Try this one on for size, a friend of my wifes changed his name to his wifes name. What a Rosie O'Donnell. DKF
My wife mentioned that she was going to hypenate her name. I told her then the wedding is off. It was not an option. We compromised and her maiden name is now her middle name.

tonorator
neither my wife or i have middle names. very strange, i know. both my older brothers have middle names. my parents said that when it came to me, they were just out of ideas, so it was just anthony. jackie took her last name as her middle name when we got married, which was cool. i'm still middle name-less. Cunning Linguist
My wife hyphenates hers for two reasons that are cool with me, I don't see what the big deal is really. 1) she was a professional business person before we met and was established in her field 2) there are no more men on her side of the family to carry on the the last name which is important to her BTW, she leans to the right and i'm a godless, tree-hugging lib
Savage Beatings
I actually like hyphenated names... when I am voting for a Judge and I have no idea what any of them stand for, I know that I can't go wrong by NOT voting for the candidate with the hyphenated last name. Cunning Linguist
I should add: If we do ever have any, or adopt, then they would probaly have both, or at least one as a middle name. I think its kinda cool to honor a family, who cares which side its on

chiefjay
how about the next generation of women that will have like 3 hyphen'd names? Their mom's maiden name, their dads last name and then their husbands last name when they get married.
Cunning Linguist
How does she carry on the family name after her then? What am I missing? When we first were married, we planned on having kids. 3 horrible miscarriges and 10 years later, we pretty much accepted the fact that it may not happen, but if it does, we'll go with the two-name thing.
