Goopster24
G'Bye Bruce! Hello Juergen? He stepped down so he might be eyeing something. Some analysts were saying his style wouldn't be suited for the Americans though. Thoughts?
Pope Flick
He stepped down so he might be eyeing something. Some analysts were saying his style wouldn't be suited for the Americans though. Thoughts? I think he's just what we need: bring a bomb attack plan to our team, get us scoring and we'd embrace the sport, especially if we could score consistently. The important thing though is bringing a coach on board that won't put players on our national team if they aren't palying in Europe: Landon Donovan for starters. If they can't or won't play there, they'll get eaten up at the WC every time. We have some of the best goalie because they all play in England. Also, he would help our team to overcome some bias with the refs, because the calls won't go our way until we actualyl win which is made harder for us because we don't get the calls. Call it what you will, but that's the reality of the situation in some part. The other part is because we only seem to have one really good game per cup and that's it. Well, not strictly true about the calls. I would say that soccer is less prone to the "star system" than most other sports. From experience (admittedly not World Cup level, of course), I can tell you that when you're running up and down as a ref, you really only see two sets of shirts, not so much the players within, the exception being when someone is persistently fouling and calls attention to himself. Sometimes you even forget who the two teams actually are because it really isn't relevant to handling the game - you just see white team and red team, or whatever. As for the Euro thing, it might help the US team but it won't help MLS at all. That said, virtually all the Brazilians and Argentinians play outside their own borders and their domestic soccer is still successful..... alexgaddis
The reality is that the MLS is never going to get big...thats fine...as a US Soccer fan I want to see ALL players playing in Europe, its the only way for the US to compete on a national level... Even soccer fans can't get into the MLS...

Ursa Majoris
playing well in the WC every four years I suppose... OK, chicken and egg......how do we get players good enough to compete well in the WC without them having a league to play in that is good enough to warrant interest from the big European clubs which then lets the players be good enough to compete well in the WC? thecerwin
which explains why you so quickly jumped in and read this thread Dude, you play in a 10 team league, you've got nothing to say. The league actually expanded and starting this year it is a 12 person league. We are all very excited about this. Now to clarify my post: "Soccer" (as in Americans playing in the sport that the rest of the world calls futbol) is a tough sport that takes skill, endurance, tough mentality, and talent. The game of "futbol" (as in the rest of the world and how they play the sport) has a bunch of flopping tools playing the game and they aren't penalized for over-flopping (I am more than likely over-generalizing the "rest of the world" and how they play). I honestly tried this year to get involved in the World Cup hype and as a result was left with an poor view of the world's soccer players. I saw too much flopping, whining, poor refing, low scoring, and tying games. Is it only an American value to not be such a little biotcth when playing in a competitive sport? I am not saying that the American team is the best because they obviously have a long way to go. Also, What is with the inconsistant penalty calls?
