Auction/Keeper League Strategy

Okay here's the situation. I am in a 12 team, auction style, keeper league (can keep up to 4 players). Allowed to keep a player two additional years after drafting them. Here are my keepers this year:

$100 total salary cap

Larry Johnson $3 (drafted for $1 two years ago)

Antonio Gates $5

Julius Jones $8

Houshmanzadeh $5

So those 4 keepers cost me a total of $21. My big question on strategy is, since I am getting who many believe is the number one overall pick for $3 (Huddle Auction sheet has him at $36) should I pay whatever price is necessary to get LT2 or SA? Even if I have to go to $50 (which I shouldn't have to), I will have 2 of the best 3 players for $53. Leaves me $26 to fill out the remaining 11 players on my roster.

Barring injury I'm guessing a lineup consisting of LJ and SA/LT2 with Julius Jones as a backup and Gates and Housh would be hard to overcome regardless who I fill out the remaining lineup with.

Would you overpay for SA or LT2 in this situation?

i would definitely be making sure that LT and SA go at or just above full value. i would not pay any price to get them, however. the beauty of the auction is that you can see what they are going for and you will be in the driver's seat. make sure they go just above full value and then, if you want, you can pass on them and let them eat up 30% or more of another owner's $$$. that leaves you with more cash to stock up on WRs.

so if i were in your shoes, i'd set a target price for each, probably $5 or so above fair value, and if the bidding goes beyond, let someone else eat. you can do this for both. if others are overpaying by that much, then keep your dough and scoop up more bargains elsewhere.

hope it helps.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have LJ locked up in a 16 team auction draft this year. I plan on letting people in my draft know that I want SA and LT (although has same by week as LJ). If I can get one of them at a decent price I'll take him, but most likely they will be bid up to mid $40 range and I'll let them go. :D
