MojoMan
Sooo..... I have a Dell Pentium 2.3 GHz with 256 RAM (about 1 1/2 years old). No hard drive. I destroyed the hard drive because there was too much pron on that hard drive (I have the disks for Win XP Pro and MS Office Pro if the new owner can use them). I was also willing to throw in a NEW Canon PIXMA MP150 printer, the keyboard, and a 17 inch flat panel Dell display. I offered this bundle to the United Way here in the DC area. They say they'll see if anyone wants it. After about a week, I axe what's going on? United Way's response...hold yer water a$$hole. F United Way. I go to the Montgomery County Public School District website. They will only accept complete computers [CPU (including hard drive (they will erase it for you-HAHA), keyboard, mouse, display]. No f'in way these a$$holes are getting this stuff. Edited July 18, 2006 by MojoMan

Ursa Majoris
Sooo..... I have a Dell Pentium 1.8 GHz with 256 RAM (about 1 1/2 years old). No hard drive. No f'in way these a$$holes are getting this stuff. United Way are a bunch of backslapping so-called do-gooders who are more political than they should be. Self righteous wazzers. Schools these days can't just accept any old stuff - they need to be able to load and run software that's up to date (they get it for a tenth of the price) and they also tend to run fleets of identical machines to cut down on the maintenance costs. darin3
Yeah, along similar lines, Salvation Army won't pick up furniture with any "scratches, rips or tears" in the fabric. Disposal of large furniture items is a BEEYOTCH around here for some reason. I almost dumped my chick's old couch in a construction dumpster late one night, but alas, I paid $30 for my complex's trash pickup company to come get it. MojoMan
I have no problem with charities not wanting chit. It has to be usable. However, I was willing to donate a perfectly usable (1 1/2 year old CPU, a 17 inch flatscreen, and a new inkjet printer). I also had the software (Win XP Pro and Office Pro) although I don't know if it would be legal for another owner to use it. This was not chit. When a computer changes owner, I believe the OS (if it's Windows) must go with it as it is integral to the computer from point of sale. Office can be given away too, but you'd have to go buy another copy. BTW, MS licensing is so byzantine it's necessary in some companies to have full time people to sort it all out. Damn that salvation army for not picking up your garbage free of charge (and of course giving you a the ability to have a tax write off to boot). If this is true, it sounds like the CPU becomes worthless. Fair enough. Ursa (and other knowledgable IT peeps)...for future reference, would you trust a charity to "erase" the hard drive? It was a perfectly good couch with absolutely no stains, just one minor tear in the back that would take someone with the time and materials a half hour to repair. Plus, I've been in their "stores" before and have seen much, much worse. I don't need the tax writeoffs.

BeeR
er a computer w/o a HD - and therefore no OS - is not exactly usable. They'd have to spend at least $100-150 for this "free" PC you're giving them. PS not saying it's not a good thought or intent or worth their while, but you also have to realize many (in fact most if not all) of the people you're dealing with as a point of contact for charities are not exactly computer whizzes, not to mention the fact that they just don't have the time/desire to mess with it. Also FYI there are a helluva lot more than 2 charities out there. Might want to try a few others before giving up. Even a local church or nursing home or some such might want it. ...or if you want to do a REALLY nice charitible thing, put a freakin HD in there

TimC
I stopped giving anything to United Way about 15 years ago when our work basically forced us to give and the guy who ran the "charity" was riding around in chauffered limousines. F United Way. Many other charities out there that aren't scamming the public.
