Eagles | Coaches optimistic about the running game

Tue, 18 Jul 2006 06:04:28 -0700

Don Benevento, of the Courier-Post, reports the Philadelphia Eagles are confident of their running game, led by RBs Brian Westbrook and Ryan Moats, headed into the 2006 season. Westbrook has proven to be one of the most versatile backs in the NFL, and can be equally dangerous as a pass receiver. However, he has been prone to injury. He made it through 12 games last season before missing the rest of the season with a foot sprain. Moats got off to a slow start in his rookie season, but he came on strong at the end replacing the injured Westbrook. He wound up with 55 carries for 278 yards. Whether he can carry that over into this season remains to be seen, but the coaches are optimistic. "He is much more comfortable, much less thinking in the play, up to the line of scrimmage," Mornhinweg said. "He is a very smart guy. However, we ask a tremendous amount out of our halfbacks in this offense." Head coach Andy Reid also is holding out hope that he will have the services of a healthy Correll Buckhalter this season. With training camp approaching fast, Reid and his staff continue to say they are designing an offense that will run the football. "We always emphasize the running game," said offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, when asked to outline the Eagles plans for the coming camp.

so...it's "foot sprain" now...not Lis Franc sprain?..... :D

by the time the season starts, we'll hear he just stubbed his big toe and split the top of the nail....

The more UNSOLICITED comments about running the ball more from Eagles coaches during DEAD TIME in the offseason, the more worried I get that the coaches might just be spreading a huge propaganda campaign. They might just be worried about their WR talent and hoping to get some extra free space in the secondary to open up the offense for first two or three games.

If their first few opponents are just a little more concerned about Philly running a little more, that might mean a few more big plays on 3rd down, if the defense guesses wrong. That could mean a victory or two.

Obviously, that's probably unlikely, but why in the world do they keep saying the same thing during a time of year when they're not required to say ANYthing about their offensive game plans. :D

:D at mentioning Buckhalter. . .

It amazes me that after four seasons of overwhelming evidence to the contrary Reid STILL thinks he'll be just fine at RB and WR with Buckhalter and Pinkston.

His record as a head coach speaks well of him, but he's got to be one of the most stubborn coaches in the league this side of Billick when it comes to standing by players that have proven themselves to be unreliable and ineffective. I wouldn't be surprised if that stubborness has cost him at least one Super Bowl trophy during the past five years.

Bottom line, the Eagles are a cheap organization that's always under the cap by a significant amount. It keeps them competitive but it has also cost them a shot at a SB ring. The one year they were agressive with Kearse and Owens, they got to the big game.

As for the Eagles running game, we've all heard it before. They plan to run the ball more this year. Blah, Blah Balah. I'll believe it when I see it. Expect Moats and Westbrook to end up with the same amount of carries if they really do plan to run a lot. They have spent some high picks on the OL the past two drafts so we'll see if they execute their "run the ball more" strategy.

at the very least, you should remove the word 'very' from the subject line

no...the very interesting part is in bold....

his fantasy value was being based on his "lis franc" sprain...

I don't recall Reid ever spewing propaganda.....it's either he says what he plans on doing....or he just rambles politician jargon that gives you no answer....

he's not interested in winning just the 1st 2 or 3 games since they only play 2 or 3 strong teams before their week 9? bye...

he's never been as adamant about running the ball...well...not since the 2003 season when we had the 3 headed monster.....Buckhalter, Staley and Westy......when Westy went down...so did the receiving threat out of the backfield...

I'm sure that's the more likely reason we keep hearing about this. Unfortunately, it's lost its luster now.

Try living here with constant barrage in the newpapers and on TV and the radio :D

8-8, that would be a dream season for Philly.... :D:D

Without Westbrook and Moats, Philly is again a very bed team.
