spain
Does anyone ever have really sore achilles tendons? Mine of been sore off and on for years. Been now both of them are just incredibly painful. I used to run alot and would try to strech them out but nothing really helped. I dont run like I used to but do occasionally get my fat ass up on a tread mill. But the whole next day I will be limping around like an old man. I did get bone spurs on my heal where the achilles inserts a few years ago but my heal is fine now. But this achilles are killing me. MojoMan
My ortho is chitty but I offer a word of warning...don't overdue it. Your Achilles could be bothering you because they're inflammed or have bad circulation. If so, you are far more susceptible to a rupture which will require surgery to repair. I had a painful bump on the side of my Achilles that a friend diagnosed as enthesitis. She suggested gentle stretching but warned me not to overdue it, as I am with you. The pain went away although the bump is still there (it might be an apophysis).

wiegie
I said my achilles were sore, not my pucker string... you probably bruised your achilles by squuezing too tightly when you were grabbing your ankles

I did, indeed, as the good doc indicated below, had a serious Achilles injury a year and a half ago. I ruptured mine playing hoops. It was a good 9+ months of recovery. I had a little "bump" on the back of my Achilles several years ago that was attributed to simple tendonitis. Little did I know that this was most likely the precursor to my injury. Definitely do NOT overdo it. See an orthopedist. You may be able to get some "inserts", as one Huddler linked to here in this thread, that may help alleviate the pain. But do NOT over-stretch. The night before I ruptured my Achilles, I had been in my gym's pool, doing some stretching (I was still getting over foot injuries from a car accident several months prior). I may have over-stretched. So, yes, go see a specialist. I'm not sure what sort of pre-emptive tests he can do (x-rays, MRIs, etc.). Chargerz would have to speak more to that. I'm not sure how you can "test" tendons. Speaking of Chargerz.... I believe Darin has had an injury to his Achilles. "Paging darin. Darin to this thread please!!" Gotta love it when the Doc pages ya to a medical-related thread...
wildcat2334
Ouch Darin - I feel for ya, I play hoops 3 times a week, Achilles rupture is my worst nightmare. I have had a sore achilles at various times- first off- rest it, until the pain is gone. Then when you do run, you need to start slowly, and really stretch only after you are warm and got a sweat. For me, my achilles pain went away after really making sure my calf, soleus, and hammys were flexible and strong. IMO, inserts help to alleviat the pain- but the reality is as you get old and fat- you are becoming less flexible- I would try and stretch the right way, get some flexibility. Your Calfs are key- takes the strain off the achilles. try some yoga or pilates

Add in the fact that I had gained a good deal of weight after my debilitating car accident. I have ALWAYS had very strong/muscular legs (from years of soccer), but it didn't matter...
