Roller Coasters
I thought this only happened to other people. I went to use my debit card yesterday and it was declined. I knew there was plenty of money so I was confused. I came home and logged on to the online banking site to see what was going on. I see that I have a negative balance of $240. I then see checks for $660, $470, $580, and $91 that I had not written. With my bank, you can click on the check and see the cancelled check. When I did this, I about crapped my pants. It had my last name along with A/C Repair Remodeling Inc., it had my address, my correct bank routing number and correct bank account number on the check. The check numbers were very close to the check number I am actually at with my own checks. The check looked perfect. After freaking out, I start to wonder how the heck someone could get all of this information. I find that the last two checks that I wrote, had not been received by either company. They were mailed over two weeks ago. I mailed them by placing them in my mailbox for the mailman to pick up. We live in a "safe" neighborhood and I never even thought twice about mailing the checks this way. It is obvious that they were stolen and the forgeries were created. With all of the online purchasing I do, the way I got taken is the old fashioned way. I'm getting the money back in a few days, but what a pain in the ass. cliaz
Okay. The first thing you want to do is contact all three of the credit reporting agencies and put a fraud alert on your SSN. Then contact the bank if you haven’t already and inform them. You will get a free copy of your credit report from the agencies; go over them with a fine tooth comb. Your bank will or should take care of the investigation since check fraud is a federal crime. If your bank has online bill pay I would suggest switching to that. It sounds likes someone took your bills when you put them in the mail. I use Bank of America bill pay after I was hit with ID theft and it’s been really nice. Make sure you that any letters you send out you have a return receipt for your records. It also doesn’t hurt to report this to the FTC. Contact all the companies that those checks were written to and get the information of where their product or repair men went to. PM me if you need any more assistance. It’s been over 2 years since my ID theft and I’m still cleaning up after it so I have some knowledge in this area.

I put the fraud alert on with the credit agencies, Spent two hours at the bank yesterday filling out all of the forms and everything, and filled out police reports. I am spending today contacting all of the people that I have automatic payments with to give them the new numbers. One good thing, the bank just called and have already credited my accounts for the checks. Edited July 20, 2006 by Roller Coasters

AtomicCEO
Who were the checks written to by the theives? Stores that have security systems? I'd want to hunt them down and hit them with something heavy pipe-like.
Dr. Sacrebleu
Not to TOTALLY hijack your thread, but you mentioned that your company is called A/C Repair. Do you have anyone to recommend in NY? Barring that, can I ask you three pretty simple AC questions? ...or does A/C refer to something completely different? Just waited for some AC guy that I picked out of the book. Told me he would be here between noon and 4 on tuesday and that initial fee is 55$. Doesn't show up, doesn't call. I call them, the guy says he's sorry, and to make it up to me will be there tomorrow AM between 8 and noon, and won't charge any inital fee. At 3 PM I get a call from a different company saying they are covering for thei buddy, and the preice for a visit is 85$ Told them to go suck an egg. Do you mind if I send you a PM? cheers

MojoMan
F()CKERS! Hope they didn't do any other damage RC. You know, I think they (law enforcement) should track down a few of these a$$holes. They should charge the perps with some kind of terrorist charge (undermining the confidence in the American financial system...whatever MAXIMAL charge they can come up with). REALLY make an example of these bastages. Hopefully, the next scumbag will think twice before trying this kind of crap.
