I finally saw "Syriana"

My first impression was "brilliant." Fiction or not, that was one very well written script.

I like how it wasn't the usual "grand conspiracy" flick. It portrayed the relationship between big oil and government influence in a much less sinister, more realistic way. Of course, the results are the same -- whether it's starting wars or covert ops -- but, in the movie, the major motivation behind all the secrecy and shady deals is the general boost of the American economy, especially over those of other countries (like China). It's certainly more believable, to me, that a bunch of old white guys at least THINK they're doing it for some kind of national good...even if their wallets get a little fatter along the way.

Excellent movie. :D

What did everybody else think?

I thought it was okay. Confusing at times, but not as much as many say. A bit long, a bit slow; however, overall it was an enjoyable film for those who like movies which don't dumb things down for the audience.

I thought it was "meh".

It had an okay plot, but was definitely slow. It was a well-made movie, which I suppose is why conspiracy theorists feel it reflects reality. However, I think we all know that in reality, a cabal of Jewish bankers runs the world. :D

We watched it last nite also. Very well done. I didn't reconize Clooney, at first. I'm not a fan of his, but he did a very good job in this flick.

I couldn't make it through it...fell asleep--way too slow for me....at least last night it was. :D

I kind of had this reaction the first time I watched it also. Not because it's a bad movie, but it's heavy....not a Saturday night popper in the ol' Sanyo.

He loves america. The one that wants to know the truth that is.

I love America, too! :D

But truth from movies, meh. :D

Clooney's best movie...O Brother Where Art Thou?.

JMHO

Swiss, why do you hate america?

:D Good one, bud. :D But you know I usually fall more on your side of the fence on issues like this. In fact, I was prepared to hate "Syriana" because I figured it would be about Bush and Cheney wanting to get richer and exact revenge along the way. It was simply much smarter than that.

Plus, to be honest, it was a movie -- I wasn't rating it on a truth scale. :D

VERY good movie.

Why do you hate America?

Clearly, his best movie is Out of Sight.

VERY good, underrated movie.

Clearly his best movie is From Dusk Till Dawn :D

"Everybody be cool.... You, be cool."

One of my favorite movies of all time -- seriously. Loved it. The truth is, though, the four movies mentioned are all radically different, so it's kinda pointless to compare them. Wait...it's never pointless to compare ANYTHING in the Tailgate. Here's my list:

1. "From Dusk Till Dawn" -- Simply one of the most purely entertaining films in my generation.

2. "O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" -- Extremely creative use of hillbillies and Homer's "Odyssey."

3. "Syriana" -- A complicated but believable (if not exactly true) depiction of the oil underworld.

4. "Out of Sight" -- A film-friendly Elmore Leonard story done very well, but not exactly remarkable.

Funny how people's tastes can be so different. I personally feel that Out of Sight is the best Clooney flick of the four you have mentioned. I also really enjoyed Ocean's 11.
