Flip_Side
Just saw the movie for the first time. Great flick, incredibly inspirational. Was very surprised to find out they lost, usually all movies have the underdogs winning, that's what makes this movie so great imo. This makes me miss the NFL season so much, time is moving so slow!!!!!!!!!!!!
CarryTheRock
I read the book years ago. When the movie came out I mentioned on a site "I wonder if they will change the ending" or something like that and a guy got really ticked because he was going to it that night...lol. He figured out they lost by however I phrased it. I didn't feel I was giving it away...
Chavez
Solid movie; takes a bit of dramatic license with the book, but it's a worhty enough addition to the sports pantheon. The book is regarded as one of the great pieces of sportswriting out there, and I'd tend to agree.
cheezhed
Great flick. Surprised to see Billy Bob in it though.
Goopster24
The book is unreal; a must read. I met a guy on a cruise a couple of years back who went to that school and he is said it's still that way and the book is dead on.

Flip_Side
Permian was not the underdog. In the movie they were. Permians whole team/coaching staff was raving about how big the Dallas Carter players were, and how they were physically tougher, blah blah blah. Capt Skinman
The book is unreal; a must read. I met a guy on a cruise a couple of years back who went to that school and he is said it's still that way and the book is dead on. I played high school football at Benson High School in Oregon. At that time in Oregon history, we were a powerhouse. It doesn't compare to the fever in Texas. These people are football sick. My daughter goes to high school here in SA and the football parents are crazy. Maybe I didn't ever see this because I was on the field but these parents are f'n crazy. And I thought North Shore suburban rich kids' parents were crazy with their sons and daughters not getting the playing time they deserve . justin
The Permian QB in the real story was Stoney Case....you know....Stoney Case, one of the great QB's in Ravens history
chiefjay
I wasn't a big fan of the movie, liked Titans better but I think I need to give this one another viewing.
Ziachild007
My brother coaches in Tx and says the movie/book is very accurate. If you are speaking about how big high school football is in Texas, then yes it is a very accurate. But as far as how the actual story of the 88 Permian Panthers relates to the movie, then its not quite that accurate. The Permian QB in the real story was Stoney Case....you know....Stoney Case, one of the great QB's in Ravens history Case was on the 88 team and did start for the 1989 team, but Mike Winchell was the actual QB of the team that the book/movie is based on. Solid movie; takes a bit of dramatic license with the book, but it's a worhty enough addition to the sports pantheon. The book is regarded as one of the great pieces of sportswriting out there, and I'd tend to agree.

Permians whole team/coaching staff was raving about how big the Dallas Carter players were, and how they were physically tougher, blah blah blah. It was coach speak. The Permian coaches were trying to make sure that their kids didn't go in there full of themselves. I question if the kids really bought into it as the movie suggested. I'm pretty sure everyone expected Permian to win the game. I know that I did, and most of those around here thought they would.
Goopster24
For those who don't know, Roy Williams of the Lions went to Permian and Ricky Williams went to Midland, their main rivals I believe.

Um, maybe that "other" Ricky Williams... but the more "popular/famous" Ricky Williams went to HS near San Diego, CA.

If you say so; in the book, I recall that Permian was pretty solidly an underdog vs Dallas Carter (who knocked them out of the playoffs a few rounds prior to the title game) and the game wasn't even close. Mike Barrow played on that Dallas Carter team, there was one bit where Wichell tried to loft a pass over his head and Barrow pretty well jumped out of the stadium and intercepted it. My co-worker's friend was All Big Ten for Wisconsin during the Dave McLain era and went down to Texas to coach HS football. Now let me say that here in the Upper Midwest, we LOVE our football - moreso in Michigan and Ohio than Minnesota and Wisconsin; dunno if it reaches the "religion" level that it does in the South, but it's pretty darn close, if ya know what I'm sayin'. He came back from Texas after a few years and said those people were f'in crazy; he felt more pressure there than in an NCAA bowl game. Chavez
doh--that's what I get for clicking the thread of a movie I have not yet seen Still worth seeing even if you know the end. The movie is less about the end result; things would've been the same had they won as far as the big picture goes. Just like Mystery, Alaska. ...wait, you've seen that one at least, right?
