Randall
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law agreed to a five-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Law spent last season with the New York Jets, leading the NFL with 10 interceptions. He will rejoin coach Herman Edwards in Kansas City. Edwards left the Jets for the Chiefs in January, and has vowed to rebuild a defense that has been near the bottom of the league for five years. Law is expected to be in Kansas City on Monday for a physical, team spokesman Bob Moore told The Associated Press. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2527839

muck
Am I the only KC homer who is really not that excited about this signing? He had all those INTs because he was playing pretty selfishly (imo) ... and we need team players, not selfish nearly/already over-the-hill players. While Lenny Walls isn't the answer, I'm not sure Ty Law is either...
Hat Trick
I think for THIS season it brings the Chefs closer to S.D. and Denver, all 3 teams should finish with decent records, KC may even surpass Denver, but i still see S.D. as the team on the rise, with Denver and KC needing everything to fall their way to win the division. 3 Good teams, SD has the least amount of issues IMO. You know I do respect you out of the box thinking and I do agree with you on some things. I do not on this one, are you a SD homer? If so i'll put my signature up for all of the offseason if you want a sigline bet. SD will not win this divison, period

While Lenny Walls isn't the answer, I'm not sure Ty Law is either... No, I was aware that you weren't thrilled about Law. Here's my thing. Law is getting old. Law is the best FA left. Law is arguably the best CB we have on the roster now. Law brings a lot to the table for this defense and scheme. Law is a seasoned veteran staying in the AFC mind you. I had hoped we'd spend the money, cause frankly Muck, this team needs a playoff win and much moreso a Super Bowl. Lamar deserves it more than anyone i can think of. Do I think it will happen just from adding Law, most likely not, but having a guy as experienced as Law in camp with the young guys and throughout the season pays for itself over the long haul of developing an attitude, swagger and overall techniques to demostrate for this defensive secondary. This is a good signing, for the team and the fans, most everyone knows back in the 90's when we had a heck of a defense it was cause we had shutdown cb's in the secondary, so guys like Thomas and Smith could get to the QB. We need 2 really good CB's for this defense and Law gives us that now. He have the Hali and Allen combo will it be enough to put this team over the top, I sure hope so. I remember having a defense and no offense, then the trend reversed and it was all offense and no defense. This is it, after this year they will begin to rebuild, it will be hard to convince Sheilds and Roaf to come back next year. Vermeil ignored the defense in seasons past and we have what we have because of that. C H I E F S in 2007
Chadman
I have seen comments about the length of the contract being an issue with Law. How is that an issue - don't teams cut high dollar players every year, or restructure? Is this contract guaranteed or something? If so, that is not good and not worth it, IMO. If not, this is a 2-3 year signing at the most, and well worth it. Maybe I'm missing something, all I can find is "details not available" regarding the deal. Hat Trick
Chiefs Ty the knot Signing Law reunites cornerback with longtime friend and coach Edwards. By ELIZABETH MERRILL The Kansas City Star They stepped out on the town Sunday night, the guys, the wives, Ty Law’s girlfriend and his mom. Herm Edwards cracked some jokes. Law gave his old coach a bear hug. Then they dined and reminisced until Law was ready for bed and a day full of house hunting and contract signing. “It was just a matter of being patient,” Edwards said. “I told him, ‘Don’t panic. Let things happen, and it’ll all work out.’ And it did.” A friendship that spans 12 years and seven NFL cities probably wasn’t the only thing that compelled Law to sign a contract with Kansas City on Monday, 18 months after he first hobbled into Kansas Citians’ hearts. But it obviously didn’t hurt. This was Law’s second flirtation with Kansas City, and by late spring, the negotiations appeared to be going nowhere. When the agents were lobbying for a megadeal, and the Chiefs’ front office was saying try again, the one constant was Law and Edwards, player and coach, and their frequent phone calls. Law would ask about Edwards’ son Marcus, a football player at San Diego State he befriended years ago. Edwards would ask Law, a five-time Pro Bowl cornerback, whether he’s stayed in shape. That question was answered early Sunday night, when a deal was done in principle and Law flew in to meet his new employers. He showed up a sculpted 206 pounds, down from his weight with the New York Jets last year, when he played with an aching foot (which he broke in 2004) but still managed 10 interceptions for Edwards. “People don’t talk about it, but I watched it,” Edwards said. “I watched what that guy had to go through with the bad foot and how he played when we had the season we had. It’s easy to say, ‘My foot hurts, and I’m not going to go this week.’ But that was never an issue with Ty Law. He lined up hurt and went to play. “Sometimes he had to sit out a series or so, and he looked back at me and said, ‘Coach, I’m going back in.’ That’s his mentality.” Edwards said Law is ready to go full speed and will be on the plane Thursday when the team leaves for training camp in River Falls, Wis. For months, it was speculated that Law might wait to join a team until midway through camp to see whether injuries caused a bigger need. But he was eager to get started, and by early last week, the Chiefs and Law’s agent, Carl Poston, were exchanging numbers at a much faster pace. On Friday, a day after the Chiefs gave Poston a figure, Poston said, “We can do that.” The contract is five years and worth a possible $30 million. Law signed most of it Monday morning and then finished it later in the day. Law, 32, is expected to meet with reporters today. “I think it’s a culmination of patience and continuing to communicate,” Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said. “There were a lot of dead spaces, if you will, off and on talks. A lot of it begins with Herman Edwards and his report on how he played and what type of person he is in the locker room and the classroom and on the practice field and how he prepares for games. “We’re happy to have him on board. I know he’s pleased to be back with Herman.” Peterson said the Chiefs and Poston sometimes went weeks without talking. That’s part of negotiations. Peterson, known around the league as one of the toughest negotiators, credited chief operating officer Denny Thum with smoothing over some of the tense spots. “Denny has a great way of saying no without upsetting agents,” Peterson said. “And my patience is a lot shorter.” He said Law wasn’t the right fit in 2005 because of the foot injury. The Chiefs ended up signing Pro Bowl corner Patrick Surtain, a neighbor of Law’s in Florida. Now Kansas City has a pair of corners that has fans buzzing that this could be the year the Chiefs are playing well into January. “I don’t want to put too much undue pressure onto him,” Peterson said. Edwards was noticeably excited late Monday, and at times his voice raised to opening-day, locker-room level. But he wasn’t about to get into any predictions. And he can’t lose his patience. “One acquisition doesn’t make it,” he said. “It doesn’t make your team. He’s a good part of our defense. He gives us some stability at the back end. But we’ve got to do a lot of things. We’ve got to win our first game. We’ve got to get ready mentally and find out how tough we’ll be.” Ty Law’s statistics Year Team G Tkl I TD F 1995 Patriots 14 48 3 0 0 1996 Patriots 13 62 3 1 0 1997 Patriots 16 77 3 0 1 1998 Patriots 16 70 9 1 0 1999 Patriots 13 57 2 1 1 2000 Patriots 15 74 2 0 0 2001 Patriots 16 69 3 2 0 2002 Patriots 16 76 4 0 0 2003 Patriots 15 73 6 1 1 2004 Patriots 7 28 1 0 0 2005 Jets 16 62 10 1 1 Total 157 696 46 7 4 Moves for the defense Since last offseason, the Chiefs have acquired seven veteran defenders through free-agency or trades. Rovers
Would this be a bad time to mention how Justin Miller had his seat moved in team meetings away from Law because he was a bad influence? Or how Law always stood off by himself at training camp? Or how he was excused from a post game Monday team meetings, while he stayed in Boston partying with his Pats buddies? Or how he got Coleman in trouble because Coleman was out of position trying to cover for Law because he was playing outside the scheme to ball hawk? Is Law still as fat as he was last year? Or, would this be a bad time to mention anything negative?

I have to think that this was either a Peterson thing, or there is just a lot of pressure on Edwards to get the Chiefs into the playoffs. I also have to think Edwards might have recalibrated Law in terms of what the expectations are. Oh, yeah... you're right, Rhodes and Coleman still have knee ligaments. Yeah, that's why they made Miller change his seat in the meeting room to get him away from Law, who was reportedly considered to be a bad influence on him. If I thought Law was worth it, I'd have been chomping at the bit to get him back. I don't want him back, not at all. I think you mean the player Harrison was.... from what I've read, he is headed to the official 6 week PUP. Aside from that, I've also read that Wilson, even by his own admission, did not play very well last year once Harrison went down. To correct your misleading quote, the 26 mil one, Law got 6 mil last year. Cutting him was almost a zero cap hit, it was a one year contract for all intents and purposes. That was obvious. Now, if you expect me to go find links from Novemeber that appeared in the press, and how Law was excused from team meetings on Mondays and how Miller was moved away from Law ... well, it just isn't worth the trouble. I ALSO said that he may improve, having reported at 208, but, I know a peeing match when I see one. BTW, if you quote another misleading quote, you perpetuate the misinformation. Law is playing for the $ now.... that means ball hawking, whether it helps or hurts his team. I think he signed with KC because Edwards will let him freelance.... while Belichick would not.
