Chiefs inquire about Volek

VOLEK UPDATE: Billy Volek might want to pay close attention to the plays he has been running on scout team for the Chargers this week.

Sources confirm the Chargers still have interest in obtaining Volek and have inquired about him in a trade. However, the Titans currently are unwilling to part with him. The Kansas City Chiefs have also inquired about Volek. Their starter, Trent Green, is out after a concussion Sunday that landed him in the hospital for two days.

Negotiations could heat up in the next couple of days, though the Titans might wait until after Sunday’s game to pull the trigger on any sort of deal with San Diego.

The Chargers could use a backup to Philip Rivers. They are currently carrying only two quarterbacks with rookie Charlie Whitehurst at No. 2. San Diego also has only 52 players on its roster at present.

Efforts to reach Titans general manager Floyd Reese were unsuccessful Wednesday.

There might be some legs to this. I have heard a RUMOR. A RUMOR only.

One of my friends sister in law is a nurse and knows one of the nurses who took care of Green in the hospital. She said that his concussion is WAY worse than they are reporting, and there was some bleeding on the brain. Chances are he may not come back at all. He was also supposedly unconcious for 11 minutes. (this was stated on local talk radio).

This is just a RUMOR, so no link and I cannot confirm this.

Mort on sportscenter tonight said that Volek will probly be moved to the Chargers following their game with them this weekend.Tenn did'nt want to trade with San Diego until after their matchup.

This is what is being reported in the San Diego paper this week also.

I really hope that's it's just a rumor. Trent's a good guy and a good ambassador of the game. But it's most important that he's healthy and able to watch his children grow up.

Two things that I question about this rumor: It's not just hersay, it's hersay to the nth degree. If you had talked to her directly, I think that would be a little different then the path it sounds like the rumor took. Anyone who has ever played "telephone" will tell you the more people it goes through, the more the message changes.

Also, I wonder with HIPPA and other privacy laws how willing medical staff would be information like this. It wouldn't suprise me if hospital administration makes explicit reminders about patient privacy/confidentiality when a "celebrity" comes in for treatment. Of course that doesn't mean information doesn't leak out...but just something to consider.

Sep 15 The Tennessean reports the Oakland Raiders have expressed interest in Tennessee Titans QB Billy Volek.

So before getting driven into the ground Shell thinks he may be able to throw up a few balls? Maybe they think they'll need 12 QB's to finish the seasn. :D

I know how Oakland fixes their problem, not Volek...but Marcus Vick. He's already an a-hole, and since he is really mobile he can just run away from all the defenders that bust through that line. Kinda like his brother had to do with the horrible Atlanta line.

In regards to green, i recall a similar thing happening to rich gannon a couple years back. initially, said it was going to be a couple games and then his career ended. not saying it's gonna happen to green, just pointing out that sometimes these injuries can be more serious than initially reported.

i understand that. just saying it can be more than initially reported. here's an opinion from ESPN insider

• My question is not whether Trent Green will return, it's if he should. Green was unconscious for eight minutes after the hit with some reports that he was having trouble breathing early in the "nap." Assuming that Green has no setbacks and returns later this month, the concern then becomes taking another hit and suffering another concussion. There have been studies that show NFL players almost by definition recover more quickly from head trauma. In fact, it may be one of the skills they have that allows them to play at this level. In the study I did for Pro Football Prospectus 2006, concussions are by far the most under-reported injuries in football. Green can return -- he's not showing amnesia or any balance/motion effects after the injury. However, at 36, behind a porous line and with a family at home, it could be a tough decision for the Greens.
