I find both of these posts meaningless. Who cares about some potential congressman from Iowa that is only trying to distance himself from Bush and uses this as a reason why.

Bush's approval rating couldn't be any worse and because our gas prices have went down his rating is going to go up? That's rediculous.

You equate quitting the Republican Party with distancing himself from Bush? :D

For this election, yes.

It likely was an intended benefit but seems unlikely the sole cause. A lot of Republicans want their party back. Becoming an indepent doesn't strike me as the best way to stop the hijacking of the Republican party. But then again, the Republican party is now epitomized by fiscal irresponsiblity, big goverment lovers, total incompetence, and religious whack jobs. When only the zeke's and dmarcs are left to defend the party line, maybe it is time to jump off the Titanic.

maybe a few more than just little ole me.....

Bush's approval rating has edged up largely on the strength of Republicans coming back to the fold — 86% with him now compared with 70% in May.

he new poll found likely voters more prone to vote for candidates who support Bush on terrorism, 45%-28%, and evenly divided on those who support and oppose Bush on Iraq. More than a quarter said Iraq is their top concern this fall. For the first time since December 2005, a majority of people did not say the war there was a mistake; the split was 49%-49%.

Bush's terror-fighting techniques drew mixed reviews. A 55%-42% majority supported his policy of wiretapping phone conversations between U.S. citizens here and suspected terrorists in other countries without getting a court order.

god bless america!

Aren't these new "republicans" and "honorable" oxymorons?

These right wingers are from the Nixon wing of the party and are more extreme than he was and he was using the NSA to spy on opponents. Where do you think the lying and power grabbing came from?

Republicans under Reagan have little in common with these people.

There are (generally speaking) five major voting blocks spread amongst two national parties...

1) Evangelical zealots

2) Uneducated urbanites

3) Political correctness zealots

4) Socialists

5) Corporatists

Sometimes there is overlap amongst the five, but not necessarily.

Generally, the person who wins is able to fan the flames of current events into a platform that reflects the fears of more likely voters than the other person.

That's a pretty p|ss poor way to pick the people who make decisions on our collective behalf.

God Bless America!

As far as the Republicans go, I would have said they break down into 4 major categories, with some overlap between any two or more:

1 The corporate wealthy

2 The mindless flagwavers

3 The uneducated rural (this group are frightened, gullible and have a lot of crossover with 2 above)

4 The religious maniacs
