The Misfit
That is incredibly lame...I walked through Sams club the other day looking at TV's and some looked awful while others looked bright and crisp...they must change the settings every week depending on which sets are selling... Another trick that Sam's Club and Wal-Mart in particular used to do is sell rebadged units (something you will also read about on the avsforum). That is, they take last year's model and sell it as this year's model under a slightly different badge number. I don't know that they still do that, but they did a couple years ago when I was in the market. The only frustrating thing about avs forum is that it has a lot of fanboys -- those who own LCDs love them best, those who own plasmas love them best. And if you really want to hear from the self-righteous, read the posts from those who have CRT front-projectors. And while at avs, check out the pics of the guy who recreated the deck of the Enterprise as a home theater room. It's inspiring.
Hugh 0ne
Just bought the Panasonic Viera 42" plasma. Will wall mount it, get a HD receiver, and be up and running by the middle of next week. In the meantime, I'll be watching my 51" Hitachi rear projection HDTV this weekend. Thanks to all for the responses and information
Tega
Hugh One - thanks for posting the question. To all the responders - Thank You! We're thinking of purchasing a plasma or LCD tv. Great info from you all.
TimC
Not. DLP's can look good if you are looking at then dead straight-on. Any off-angle viewing (above/below or side-to-side), and the picture quality really suffers. I really wonder about longevity issues with the DLP's also with the color wheels & mirors involved. We had the TV (Samsung 56" DLP HLS5687W for an affordable $2,199.99) picked out for the living room until I saw this post. I went to Circuit City at lunch and checked out the Samsung in person and didn't see how it looked bad at an angle. It looked just as good as the Sony 42" LCD we just bought. Could you explain further? Now I admit I've always been a Sony fanboy and my 2nd choice behind this Samsung DLP is the 55" Sony LCD. The difference was Samsung has 1080p and Sony doesn't. I do notice a difference on the 42" we just bought and this was the kicker. The Sony 1080p is more expensive than the Samsung. Which one...which one? TimC- I was considering the Samsung DLP's before I went with the Pioneer plasma. If you stand in front of DLP at eye level, the picture looks quite nice. But, if you go towards the side or look up at the TV the picture will be noticeably darker. This would be a real problem in my room as the kitchen adjoins my family room. Football must be crystal clear at all viewing angles!!! I would not worry much about the 1080p. I am not an expert, but from everything I have read, 1080p at this point is largely marketing hype as no native programming exists at 1080p. I would seriously consider spending the extra bucks for a plasma before popping for a DLP. I would recommend Panasonic or Pioneer brand. Just my opinion & good luck.
