billay
OK, so apperently I'm lucky to be here at all. Any assistance will be appreciated. I came home from work today to discover that my internet was behaving oddly. I would double-click the IE shortcut, the window would open for a few seconds, then close. I rebooted, still happens. Rebooted computer and modem, still happens. So in the few brief seconds that the window is open I notice the yahoo toolbar. It says "Attempting to retrieve buttons from Yahoo" then closes. I start to wonder, what if there's something in the script that tells IE that if the yahoo toolbar fails, then close the IE window. I go into Add/Remove programs and get rid of all the yahoo stuff: toolbar, yahoo messenger, yahoo mail. I try the internet again and it stays open but it is ridiculously slow, like 10 minutes to load a page slow. I'm on roadrunner, so needless to say, this is several orders of magnitude slower than I'm accustomed to. A possible point of note: Our anti-virus/firewall protection has lapsed this week. I have been meaning to come here a ask for a good replacement. I know the techies around here are not fond of McCaffee. Any ideas?

billay
OK I seem to be back up to speed, but something doesn't sit right. I let my McAffee lapse with the intention of getting something different. Well, with this episode, I went ahead and renewed McAffee anyway fearing the worst. Not that I've renewed it, everything is working fine. I'm very suspicious. It would have been 1 thing if I had renewed then run virus protection, found something, eliminated it, then fixed the performance problem. But as it stands, all I did was renew my subscription and get the updates, and my computer is suddenly fine? Is it possible that they rig it to give you problems if you let your protection lapse, in order to scare you into renewing? Like the auto mechanic who fixes one problem and creates another to ensure that you'll be coming back to his shop soon enough?

For all their maneuverings, I've never heard of any of the major anti-virus companies using scare tactics like that. Then of course, there's SpyAxe. I would lean more towards coincidence without any further proof.
skylive5
Maybe the slowdown was because McAfee was looking for something and it wasn't there after you let it lapse, taking up processor time? Just a thought.
Azazello1313
you mighta tried doing a full uninstall of mcaffee software and all its little nodules first. i'm sure it's not a malicious thing on their part (way too easy for them to be exposed and far too much for them to lose for them to risk that sort of thing), but it definitely sounds like the lapse/reinstatement of their service was tied in with your problems.
