Hey all -

Looking to gather some information on reputable shipping companies for bringing product in from China to arrive either in Los Angeles/Long Beach (then trucked to northern California) or to arrive into the Oakland ports. (then trucked a much shorter distance as already in norCal)

It would be full standard sized shipping containers.

Any leads as far as companies, etc. so I can work on getting quotes would be much appreciated.

Let me send a quick message to a buddy of mine who used to be in the industry.

Sounds like you want a one-stop-shop... That is, you want a freight forwarding company that can do the freight and customs clearance.

Getting stuff from China to the US is half my job life. I work with one freight forwarding company 95% of the time now. They have a great Cincinnati branch office. I'll PM you the name of the company. They have a branch office for Long Beach. I can't speak for that branch, but I am impressed with the company in general.

In my experience, customer service for forwarders on the west coast can be sketchy. There's a lot of Asian-decent employees out there who donta speaka engrish very well.

When you get quotes, make sure you get a quote with all costs. Some places will quote you just for freight, but not add in fuel surcharges (also called BAF), peak season surcharges (Aug-Jan), customs freight clearance, security charges, etc. I always get quotes from the port to the destination dock as most factories pay to get it on the boat (FOB Shanghai for example).

Also, if you don't have it already, you should know your HTS number (Harmonized Tarrif Schedule number) to figure out the duty. They should be able to help you with that, but leagally its your responsibilty. Have them check for antidumping or countervailing duties with the associated number before you import. Duties can be 10 times higher from China on some goods compared to other free-market countries like Taiwan or India. You don't want to get slapped with a 50-100% duty bill if you're not expecting it.
