Im not sure if we ever broke it down this way..Again this is an opinion thread. Who is your favorite

Singer

Guitarist

Bass Player

Drummer

Other ( could be piano , horn etc)

Singer: Rob Halford..Grew up a big Priest fan. This guy has amazing range which made for some versatile songs from JP..Especially their early stuff. He had the classic heavy metal scream..

Guitarist: Stevie Ray Vaughan...IMO the best ever. He could attack a song and leave your jaw dropped yet also play a tasty slow blues song like the people he idolized..It was truly a major loss when he passed away..Very sad and way too soon.

Bass : Bill Wyman used to lock in with Charlie Watts and create an awesome rythym section..Emotional rescue is one of the best songs that highlight bass that I like..

Drums: John Bonham...The backbone to Led Zepplin . Driving beats ..His drumming was so recognizable. The minute you hear it you know its him as your flipping through the radio channels.."That break part in "Fool in the rain" is awesome. Also the simple yet very powerful drums in "When the levee breaks"

Very difficult to single out one for each, so I'll go with artists I've actually seen live.

Singer - Roger Daltrey of the Who.

Guitarist - Randy California of Spirit. Ridiculous talent, he played guitar behind his head, one-handed and with his teeth. Used to play with Hendrix at one stage when he was, I think, sixteen.

Bass Player - Lemmy of Hawkwind and later Motorhead, without question. No-one can drive a band like Lemmy.

Drummer - Charlie Watts of the Stones, no fuss, no frills, just absolute consistency and precision. Also Simon King, with Lemmy the relentless driving force of Hawkwind.

Other (could be piano, horn etc.) - Keith Emerson, of ELP who I saw playing three separate keyboards simultaneously.

Vocals= Amy Lee (haunting is my best description)

Guitar= Carlos Santana (He makes that instrument speak to you)

Bass= Pretty much every bassist to play for Metallica

Drums= John Bonham

Other= Living in New Orleans it would be a crime to not name Nicholos Payton here.

One other honorable mention has to go to Jeff Raines who's guitar play in Galactic is stellar!

Singer - Robert Plant. The most recognizable voice in rock and roll.

Guitar - Jimi Hendrix. Possibly the most innovative musician in any genre of all time.

Bass - Les Claypool - Dig on some old Primus if you don't believe me.

Drums - Gotta go with Neil Peart. This opionion was formed in the early 80s when I saw the Moving Pictures tour.

Amazing bass player. When I worked at Tipitinas in the late 80's, saw them blast the roof off the joint.

Jerry was a Race Car Driver.

I am a big George Porter Jr. fan. I didnt see it on the list, but he is the funkiest.

Can't believe I'm replying to this as never been a fan of "best" or "favorite ever" lists much, esp regarding music - too many to choose from, esp across genres....even picking a few favs is a tough call.

OTOH what the flip , slow day at work.

PS adding fav keyboardist and horn player as no way should that be lumped into "other." Anyway...

Singers: Ella, Basia, NK Cole, Sinatra, Connick, McCartney, B Cummings, Mike McDonald

Guitarists: Morse, Metheny, Benson, Jeff Beck (when he's on that is), SRV, Larry Carlton (along w/most other Steely Dan token guitarists), Duane Allman

Bass: McCartney, Jaco P, Squire

Drums: Gadd, Frey

Keys: Peterson, Leavell, Max Middleton, Lorber, Payne

Horns: T Scott, Getz, G Washington, Shorter

Other: JL Ponty, Noel Pointer

Singers - I'm a huge Billie Holliday fan. For rock, about the only one that comes to mind is Peter Cetara in his Chicago days.

Guitarist - I really like Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. Jazz guitar is really underrated by most people, I think. Wes Montgomery is the man.

Bass Player - Ron Carter is my fave. I can't think of a rock bassist that sticks out to me.

Other ( could be piano , horn etc) - Lots of good jazz horn players. But if I had to narrow this pick down to one guy, it would be jazz pianist Horace Silver. Probably my all-time favorite musician (Miles Davis is a close second).

Wes Montgomery is the man.

good call. i love grant green and bill frisell (two guys who, in different ways, come right out of wes) as well. i mention green especially because just now, he just came on the radio. i'm pretty sure it's off the larry young album, 'into somethin'. what a great quartet:

larry young : organ

grant green: guitar

sam rivers: tenor

elvin jones: drums

music like this makes me happy :D

edit: yeah, i had the album right, the tune was 'plaza del toros'. that's a pretty easy one pick out blindfolded though because each of the 4 have such a distinctive voice, and i doubt they all recorded together outside of that date.
