BERLIN (Reuters) - German politicians condemned on Tuesday a decision by a Berlin opera house to cancel performances of Mozart's "Idomeneo" over concerns they could enrage Muslims and pose a security risk.

 

The Deutsche Oper in west Berlin announced on Monday it was replacing four performances of "Idomeneo" scheduled for November with "The Marriage of Figaro" and "La Traviata."

 

The decision was taken after Berlin security officials warned that putting on the opera as planned would present an "incalculable security risk" for the establishment.

 

In the production, directed by Hans Neuenfels, King Idomeneo is shown staggering on stage next to the severed heads of Buddha, Jesus, Poseidon and the Prophet Mohammad, which sit on chairs.

well sure, but it's impossible to just blink your eyes and see this happen. even under the most optimistic scenario we're decades away from oil independence (in the meantime, it might not be a terrible idea to exploit our own domestic fossil fuel resources more fully, but of course that's another topic.)

 

but even then...what about all the muslim immigrants IN europe? the west has no way around dealing with "those people", now and in the future. just wishing them away like this is incredibly pollyannish.

I think this almost has to happen at an individual level first. It's not like the established infrastructure is going to purposely displace itself... but if I can make my household a lot less dependent upon oil, and a bunch of other people do the same thing, then the infrastructure has to change despite itself in order to keep up.

I don't think anyone here is proposing that "wishing them away" is an effective course of action. None the less, this whole thread was started by linking to an example of an extremely lame thing. I'd imagine that all of us agree with that. I suppose that all of us agree that things would have been a whole lot cooler if they never found oil under the middle east. No harm in that.

 

However, perhaps all Muslims who still practice the same backwards garbage that we're all talking about would be less empowered if the countries that orgininate that thought were less relevant. After all, I'm not so sure that their backwards ways aren't as much a result of the fact that, unlike every other country in the world, they've got us all by the balls and have, thus, never had to evolve into a more progressive and acceptible way of life. However, once you move elsewhere, that crap eventually has to end. Gotta think dude's going to have a lot harder time making his wife and daughter walk around with her face hidden when every other woman around can do what she wants.

 

Thus, while it's hardly a "strategy", waiting out the oil thing should end up having an effect.

A LARGE part of al-Qaeda/The Taliban's funding was Saudi oil wealth - the royal family will brown-nose the US, sure, but I doubt anyone would call funding those two groups "doing what we want" - well, no one not

That is a good point. I can't necessarily think of a solution to de-radicalizing an immigrant population, especially in these times where violence and hatefulness is apparently a "right"

Actually, it seems there is a movement among on both state and municipal levels to move forward into a more eco-friendly (by that meaning less pollution, less dependent on fossil fuels) with or without federal support.
